editor's note

Hi !

Have you read anything great lately? I’ve noticed a trend in three of my favorite books from the past year: they are ostensibly about really small things, but are in fact about Really Big Things. Each author uses the miniscule as a vehicle to describe the macro, and each book ends up being an incredibly satisfying read. Stay with me...

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatatil focuses on unsung heroes of the natural and animal world, ranging from cassowaries (I saw one once in Australia! It was awesome!) to fireflies. Within those descriptions, Nezhukumatatil weaves in stories of her upbringing being raised by a Filipina mother and Indian father. It’s lyrical, it’s fascinating, it’s at times purposely jarring. It’s quite a feat.

My Inner Sky by Mari Andrews is focused on four parts of the day: twilight, golden hour, night, and dawn. As she explores each phase of time, Andrews navigates her struggles (and triumphs) with illness, grief, relationships, and loneliness. I realize the premise sounds depressing, but the book itself isn’t—Andrews finds huge joys and wins in the quotidian, showing us that even when we are working on some Really Big Things, the small things are what keep us going.

The Book of Difficult Fruit by Kate Lebo is maybe the weirdest of the three, but I mean that in a good way. What a cool concept—a whole book about fruit that doesn’t cooperate! It’s a fascinating dive into esoterica… and also pivotal moments in Lebo’s life ranging from leaving a claustrophobic long-term relationship to exploring family secrets.

This story-behind-the-story subgenre of personal essays feels especially timely. Getting to do small things again like having friends over for a casual pop-by (I made last-minute hummus! It was thrilling!) and eating in restaurants (it was nice to meet you, sweet potato shakshuka) feel rather monumental.

Hope you can dive deep into a great read (and some barbecue) this weekend.

ideas for unwinding this weekend
  • I cannot stop eating these injera crisps. Medium Spicy has a slight edge on Garlic & Sea Salt but it’s close.

  • If you're looking for an absolutely delightful not-too-heavy, not-too-light show, watch Starstruck, about a woman that somewhat accidentally finds herself romantically involved with a celebrity.

  • Monthly cookie boxes make a great gift and pastry chef Melissa Funk Weller is very good at what she does.

  • You know when you read sentences so good you have to put the book down and stare bug-eyed at the wall? That’s happened to me multiple times throughout Kiese Laymon’s Long Division, which was originally published in 2013, but has just been re-issued

  • Speaking of books, I’ve started a new tradition: any time I’m in a new city, I buy a book at the local bookstore and write on the inside cover the name of the bookstore, the city, and when I was there. Shoutout to Landmark Booksellers in Franklin, TN (Somebody’s Daughter, May 2021) and Golden Fig Books in Chapel Hill, NC (All Stirred Up, June 2021).

  • Just some very chic lamps to stare at, via Megan on our team.

  • Are cow print bottoms a “thing”? See shorts here, pants here.

  • "I’m loving the latest season of the Pew Charitable Trusts’ “After the Fact” podcast. It takes listeners to the intersection of race and research over six episodes, exploring how demographics are shaping the nation, diversity in the STEM workforce, and how a race lens is applied in areas from health care to public safety to economics and housing to higher education." -Chelsea S. Reader rec

  • I’m ready to have a Summer of Gazoz. Been leafing through these recipes and am psyched to ferment some fruit.

  • Not sorry we’re still talking about shoes here because Olivia has found the ultimate sneaker sandal.

  • Mary Anne on our team just added this little makeup brush cleaner to her Sunday routine. “I used to just use my hands but this made it way quicker,” she confesses.

  • Bought the viral pasta. Waited 12 weeks for it to arrive. Kinda into the viral pasta.

  • Ask for the group: Anyone have really good “tablescaping” items? Think: outdoor tablecloths, bud vases, etc. Hit reply to let us know.

  • Perhaps you need some hedgehog vids?

  • If you're still hunting for summer swimsuits, here's a bralette actually meant for bustier chests, a red/white/blue collection in lots of styles, the coolest one-piece ever, and a simple v-neck—we're partial to "herb."
