Reader,

You know, every single one of us has faced the question of when to make a major life change:

  • "Should I move to a new city?"
  • "Should I get out of this relationship?"
  • "Should I switch jobs?"

This is one of the toughest questions that any of us face.

When our friends face a major change, it’s so easy for us to give them advice. The answer often feels painfully obvious. But when we are the ones stuck in a tricky situation, the answer suddenly gets murky.

This is further complicated when it comes to switching jobs because making a change could impact your income, your social group, your daily rhythms, even your sense of who you think you are.

It's a loaded question!

No wonder it's so hard.

Thankfully, there are clues that give you the hint of whether it’s time to make a career change or not. I’ve found them to be pretty predictive.

Clue #1: The "Sunday Scaries"

How do you feel on Sunday nights when you look at your calendar? Are you excited? Do you start writing notes of all the stuff you can't wait to dive into on Monday?

Or do you have the Sunday Scaries — that feeling in the pit of your stomach where you just know, “Ugh, I'm walking into five more days…" It's like a heavy dread you can't set down.

That’s a huge red flag that maybe it’s time to switch jobs.

Clue #2: A toxic work situation

Yesterday, I shared our "Is your job toxic?" quiz. Based on the quiz results so far, I'd say at least 60% of the hundreds of thousands of people receiving this email meet the "toxic work situation" bar.

More signs you have a toxic work situation:

  • Your boss and coworkers don’t take you seriously.
  • You're underpaid
  • You dislike your boss or team
  • You've gotten a raise or promotion, but you still feel stuck

Each of these are a red flag that it's time to look for a new job.

Clue #3: You haven't gotten a raise in years

If you've failed to get a raise for 3-4 years, that’s a sign you’re not being valued.

Nothing wrong with staying at a job for the long term — I work with employees who’ve stayed at IWT for 5+ years — but it’s critical that you show growth in your role and responsibilities. And you get paid accordingly.

Some people spend years, even decades, trying to ignore these clues. They grind away and hope things will improve, but they don't. Why would they?

If you want things to change, you have to make the change.

Tomorrow, I'll show you how to get started.

Signature

P.S. There's one more sign it's time to make a career change: "I guess my job's good enough." It's not toxic. You don't dread it. But it's also been a long time since going to work energized you or made you happy.

This is a dangerous grey area because while your job isn't bad enough to push you to a better one, you're obviously not living your Rich Life either. So what do you do?

Do you settle? Have you passed the pinnacle of your career already?

Or do you make a change?

Your turn: Where are you today? What do you want from your career over the next year, 5 years, 10 years? (Reply to this email and let me know.)
