Exciting New Tools for Designers, July 2021

Summer’s usually a quiet time in app development, but not this year! Every month we put together this roundup of the best new tools for designers and developers that we’ve found in the previous four weeks. In July’s edition, you’ll find apps for generating images, CSS code, tons of free icons, and as always, some awesome free fonts.

Matter

If you want to have a successful and fulfilling career, you need to grow, and the best way to achieve growth is through productive feedback. Matter is a service that creates a framework for feedback for teams and freelancers so that you can discover where you lack skills and where you’re already excelling. There’s a free plan available.

A Bashful Button Worth $8,100,000

When Jason Grigsby tried to order food from Olive Garden, he ran into a problem: the checkout button was forced offscreen by a bug. This led him on a quest to discover the cause of the problem, a common issue on iOS, and investigate the business implications of the bug. The cost to Olive Garden’s owners? $8.1 million!

Leaf

There are many different formats for code tutorials, but they all originate with the monolithic block of text with code examples inserted. Tackling this problem is Leaf, an incredible in-development platform for sharing code examples. Inspired by Stripe’s documentation you can write text and code side by side to guide readers through your snippets.

Making a Strong Case for Accessibility

Accessibility is one of the cornerstones of a good website. Still, too many sites fail to make it part of their design, not because the designer isn’t sold, but because the client doesn’t understand the value of inclusive design. In this must-read article, Todd Libby shares his tips on how to get stakeholder buy-in and improve the a11y of your projects.

Clover

Clover is an exceptional set of planning tools for creative professionals that includes whiteboarding, todos, and a daily planner all in one app. With an infinite canvas, so your ideas can grow, freeform sketching to express yourself, and integrated to-do lists as a practical path to realizing ideas, there’s a free plan and paid plans start at $6/month.

Inside The W3C War Over Privacy

There are two clearly defined sides in the war over user privacy: Tech companies like Apple and Google that are locking out the opposing side, and companies that rely on data like Facebook and analytics firms. Issie Lapowsky reports on the war raging behind the scenes at the W3C over the future of data protection and privacy.

Guru

Guru is a company wiki with a difference. Information is organized in collections and boards, so everything your team needs to know is in one place. There’s a browser extension and Slack integration, so data is available everywhere your team needs it. There’s a free plan for teams of up to 3, and paid plans start at $5 per month.
