Album Daily
#91 - The Week of August 9th - 13th

Happy Monday Pals! With the Olympic closing ceremonies last night and no football for another few weeks, we are officially in the dog days of summer. The days are long, the nights are hot, and the only cure in sight IS FOR KANYE TO RELEASE HIS DAMN ALBUM ALREADY. I swear Ye plays with my emotions more than my high school girlfriend ever did. He should get the gold medal for being a tease. Ya ya I know, I shouldn't be surprised. But against my better judgment, did I let myself get my hopes up? You bet I did.

So if we all have to wait another week (or several) before Mr. West gets his act together, we might as well fill the time with some killer albums from our favorite email newsletter. We've got a brand new album from a classic Album Daily group as well as a throwback from the 70's!

So check 'em out, and don't forget to turn your speakers up!

Release Date: March 16th, 2019
Top Tracks: Alice, Falling, East Chicago, IN
Similar Artists: Mt. Joy, Hippo Campus, The Brook & The Bluff

Name something more Midwest than naming your band after the Midwest. I'll wait.

Midwest or Topwest or Leftwest, we're thrilled to have discovered this one for you because we might've stumbled onto your new favorite band all of the sudden. We're so upset that we only got 6 songs out of this 2019 debut EP from Michigander. It's pop-rock and it's just so damn fun to jump around and listen to. Nice melodies, digestible lyrics and building crescendos. 3 ingredients for a good feeling. We're behind though. Michigander has already released another EP in 2021. Give them both a listen!

Michgander has toured with some Album Daily favorites: Mt. Joy, Hippo Campus, Silversun Pickups, Foster the People, etc. They're doing the indie-rock circuit. Michigander is the brain-child of Jason Singer. He's at the forefront of this project. Check out this Detroit News piece where they break down the artist!

The Grand Illusion

Genre:  Rock
Release Date: July 7th, 1977
Top Tracks: Come Sail Away, The Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself
Similar Artists:  Boston, REO Speedwagon, Journey

Most of the time, we at Album Daily stick to works that have been released within the last few years. We’re not trying to be as comprehensive as Release Radar, but if there’s a killer album released, you’ll know about it. Every so often though, it’s worthwhile to peek a little bit further back. So this time let’s go all the way back to 1977 and rediscover Styx seventh studio album. While The Grand Illusion may not be the first classic rock album you think of when it comes to the ’70s era, it certainly fits in with the finest. With heavy use of synthesizers, it’s a bit more progressive than some of its contemporary albums, but it certainly has no shortage of inspiring builds, catchy hooks, and rip-roaring guitar solos. With rock legends Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, and J.Y. Young in peak form, this album is definitely worth another look!

Bonus Content: Despite the widespread commercial success of The Grand Illusion, having gone triple platinum, AND another 15 killer studio albums, Styx is still not a part of the Rock and Roll hall of fame. They’re even the first musical act to have gone multi-platinum with four consecutive albums. Many fans, including myself, believe this is an absolute travesty. Check out this article that walks you through Styx’s discography and includes a link to petition them into the Hall of Fame!

Polydans

Roosevelt

Genre: Pop
Release Date: February 26th, 2021
Top Tracks: Easy Way Out, Feels Right
Similar Artists: The Parcels, Poolside, Holy Ghost!

Need your 80's montage soundtrack? HERE IT IS! Pop-rock has got to be one of the best genres out there and Roosevelt’s Polydans is top-notch. This 30-year-old German named this album for a very specific reason. Poly represents how “polyphonic” the songs are (producing many sounds simultaneously) while “dans” represents the Norwegian disco scene that’s greatly influenced Roosevelt.

Another artist that influenced Roosevelt from a young age was The Strokes. He saw their MTV concert when he was just 13 years old and wanted to grow up to be just like them. Want to learn more about Roosevelt? Read this article by Interview Magazine called “Meet Roosevelt, the German Musician Shaking Up Disco.”

Private Space

Durand Jones & The Indications

Genre: Blues
Release Date: July 30th, 2021
Top Tracks: Witchoo, Love Will Work It Out, Sea of Love
Similar Artists: Black Pumas, Curtis Harding, Lee Fields & The Expressions

Mmmmmhmmmmm we’re back with a 3rd installment of some Durand Jones & The Indications. Private Space is soul, R&B, and spreading sweet sweet music love. Witchoo is an anthem, Love Will Work It Out makes you believe in humanity again, and the album is pretty darn cohesive as a whole.

If you’re digging this, check out their American Love Call album and Aaron Frazier’s solo album Introducing… for enough tunes to start (or continue) your best soul train album.

Jamie (Reimagined)

Brittany Howard

Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date:  June 22nd, 2021
Top Tracks: History Repeats, Stay High again..., Goat Head
Similar Artists:  Alabama Shakes, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Whitney

"RRRRREEEEMIXXX" - Brittany Howard, probably, on June 22, 2021. Brittany released this original album back in 2019 and now, a full 2 years later, she's back with this fantastic batch of remixes. If you can't find something in this collection of 13 songs that you don't like, I don't know what to do with you, man. Bon Iver, Fred again…, Jungle, Childish Gambino, Syd. I mean what more do you want? Brittany gave the remixing artists free rain over the original tracks it sounds like as they're varied across genre and construction. Most take a distinctly more electronic path than the original songs and production. You're bound to be entertained on this one!

We have featured Brittany Howard before, just not as Brittany Howard. If you're a keen listener, you might recognize Brittany Howard as the lead singer of the Alabama Shakes. We featured their album Sound & Color back in early 2020. We're glad she's branched out from the band to originally create the album and more glad that she pulled back in a huge variety of artists to make this remix album.
