Hurry Slowly - Satisfaction vs Vulnerability

Hi Friends-

I'm excited to announce that Season 4 of the Hurry Slowly podcast is now in full swing. I released an S4 teaser episode a few months ago, but now I'm settling into a regular rhythm of releasing a new episode every month. And the lineup I have in store for you is STRONG. : )

I'm kicking things off with an incredible interview with gathering guru Priya Parker. Given her expertise in both conflict mediation and creating transformative gatherings, Priya is perfectly poised to guide us through this fraught moment as we emerge (and then retreat and then emerge) from the pandemic with ambitions to build a new world.

She brought an electric energy and so much wisdom to our conversation. You won't want to miss this one!

Satisfaction vs vulnerability. This interview with embodiment coach and conflict facilitator Prentis Hemphill on belonging is deeply thoughtful and provocative: "Where it gets really generative is when we are vulnerable. One of the things I often say when I'm facilitating is that there's a direct correlation between your satisfaction and your vulnerability. I'm not saying that it's equal, but I'm saying there's a direct correlation between the likelihood that you'll be satisfied and your willingness to be vulnerable. So I want people to know that, that's what we're trying to get to. We're trying to risk enough with one another.”

It's unfair and it doesn't make sense. 👈 This phrase could be well-applied to most of 2020. But this piece is in fact about the wisdom of not offering advice. Stick with it through the first few paragraphs and it's worth it: "When we offer wisdom or insight, we take away agency and grace. Paradoxically, the world makes a lot less sense when we think that everything is purposeful."

The 9.9% is the new American aristocracy. I was recently inspired to revisit this Atlantic piece on meritocracy, wealth, and class division from 2018, and it's still fresh. Maybe even more relevant now: "The meritocratic class has mastered the old trick of consolidating wealth and passing privilege along at the expense of other people’s children. We are not innocent bystanders to the growing concentration of wealth in our time. We are the principal accomplices in a process that is slowly strangling the economy, destabilizing American politics, and eroding democracy. Our delusions of merit now prevent us from recognizing the nature of the problem that our emergence as a class represents."

You’re still exhausted. A beautiful piece from Anne Helen Petersen on surfing yet another wave of pandemic burnout — the over-scheduled summer: "I think the real problem is that life is still exhausting because the pandemic was and remains exhausting in so many invisible ways — and we still haven’t given ourselves space to even begin to recover. Instead, we’re just softly boiling over, emptying and evaporating whatever stores of energy and patience and grace remain."

Just like heaven. This piece is impossible to explain but lovely to read: "Last year I visited a friend in Rhode Island. We ate dinner in Providence. He told me his 82-year-old father was getting weak. And for himself: 'I’m turning 40,' he said. 'I didn’t expect all this.' He looked at his dinner plate. 'Don’t laugh, but I was counting on the Singularity.'"

Location-based pay is the newest conflict between workers and employers.

All the right words on climate have already been said.

Happiness belongs to the self-sufficient.
