10JS / Netify starts a kickstarter, Optimising React Apps, and more

Kyle Simpson started a Kickstarter campaign to get funds for the second edition of “You don’t know JS” books (as there are four books left). I’m personally a big fan of those books and Kyle’s unique writing style.

Kyle also opened about his relation with O'Reilly in this reddit post. Long story short, they passively took 90% of the royalties without doing any marketing at all.

Consider supporting the project. We all need those books.

A nice list of optimizations one can use to improve the React app bundle size. My favorite is the new JSX transformation (since React 17). Or switch to Preact, as they suggest in the comments.

With ls-lint, you can encourage and enforce specific patterns for file/directory naming within your project. Say you want to name directories in snake_case or have the .tsx files named in CamelCase (they are probably React components). Quite handy to be used on pre-commit Git hook, or you can also use it as part of your CI routine.

I love jq. It has a nice functional programming ring to it. The query language they invented is straightforward and concise, but at the same time is very powerful. Have a look at this nice tutorial to get a grasp of the basics.

A powerful piece on burn-outs. I have definitely been there, so it resonates a lot. But it also got me thinking (and I know it may sound a bit glaring, but it’s not) how lucky we are to work in our industry. There are people out there who have to work no matter what. Because they have families to feed, the bills to pay, and the market is not so undersaturated as IT is. Talk with them about your burn-out problems.
