“As the 1970s dawned, the Beach Boys were in crisis,” Ben Sisario writes. As the culture shifted, the band was facing irrelevance. Brian Wilson was withdrawn and unstable in the wake of his attempt to make “Smile.” What the group did next — enter a period of experimentation and reinvention that highlighted the talents of the entire band — is the focus of a new boxed set. Ben explores this moment in an Arts & Leisure story that may change your perspective on this era in the band’s history.

Jon Caramanica, a critic well-versed in Kanye West eras, tackled the latest, “Donda,” this week, as the rapper’s 10th studio album belatedly arrived on the heels of his third stadium-size listening event. Drake’s sixth LP, “Certified Lover Boy,” wasn’t far behind: Joe Coscarelli and Ben looked at the terms of both albums’ releases, and where the two hip-hop superpowers diverge in strategy.

Plus: Jeremy Gordon told the story behind the Asian arts collective 88rising soundtracking the new Marvel movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Abba returned with the music it has long been promising (and news about its first new album in 40 years). Jon Pareles wrote the obit for a legend, Lee (Scratch) Perry. And perhaps you have 5 minutes for the trumpet?
