How to gift a trip image

If you’re ready to go big, but it’s not really a get-down-on-one-knee situation, why not give…a trip?

We chatted with travel company Going’s spokesperson Katy Nastro about giving your partner/friend/parent/sibling/cousin (sure, why not?) a trip as a gift, and what to know before you start booking flights for someone else. Here are a few of her tips:

  • Make it a catch-all. An expensive vacation can count for a Christmas + birthday + anniversary + or any other holiday gift for the year.
  • Start local. If you live in or near a bigger city, check for deals at hotels between busy travel times. No one is trying to book a suite in downtown Chicago on January 17, for example.
  • Remember, it’s a gift. If you’re joining the trip, make sure you take their interests and travel needs into account when planning. Not everyone wants to be surprised with your dream backpacking trip.
  • Travel compatibility. If you haven’t traveled together before, double-check that you’re not going to immediately get into a fight over who gets the window seat. This is especially important when it comes to money: It doesn’t matter how close you and your sister are if you want to go glamping, but she’s happier in a regular tent.
  • Ask if they have TSA PreCheck. What, are you going to stand around and wait for them?

But most of all, have fun. Just kidding, what do you think this is? An office secret santa? Get serious, this is the unlimited budget category.
