How one woman settled $350,000 in federal student loans

You may have heard otherwise but settling student loan debt is possible
Melissa Loe lived with the burden of her federal student loans for decades.

As someone who lives with Type 1 diabetes, much of her disposable income went toward managing her high medical costs. Add in her student loan payments each month and she barely scraped by financially.

But Loe managed to accomplish something amazing and rare: While filing for bankruptcy, she successfully settled $350,000 in federal student loan debt with the Department of Education.

Her story highlights a little-known truth about student loan debt: Those who would benefit the most from filing for discharge in bankruptcy often don’t even try because it’s widely believed that it’s impossible to achieve.

But it’s not, and Loe wants people to know that.

“Renegotiating this loan gives me options and that gives me hope,” Loe says. “Hope is everything.”

Read more about Loe’s story and how she successfully settled her federal student loan debt.
