The GIST - The saga continues.
Happy Friday!

Quote of the day
We are going to make every seat count to benefit each of our players directly. We hope to see other teams across all sports consider adopting the model, especially in women's sports.
— Angel City FC president Julie Uhrman, announcing her NWSL team’s ingenious initiative to give a percentage of all ticket sales directly to the players. HYFR.
⚾️ MLB Playoffs: Down, but not out
The GIST: With their backs against the wall, the defending World Series champs staved off elimination. Can they do it again tomorrow?
National League (NL): Behind 3-1 in the series after a lackluster performance on Wednesday, the LA Dodgers kept their back-to-back World Series hopes alive with a 11–2 win over the Atlanta Braves yesterday. Infielder Chris Taylor came up clutch, blasting not one, not two, but three home runs in the victory.
- Today’s a travel day before tomorrow’s 5:08 p.m. ET Game 6 in Atlanta. Will the Braves clinch it at home or will we have an NL Championship Series (CS) Game 7 rematch? Sorry, Atlanta fans, we want the drama.
American League (AL): Over in the ALCS, the Houston Astros routed the Boston Red Sox (again) on Wednesday to take a 3-2 series lead. The ’Stros have a chance to clinch their third World Series appearance in five years, at home tonight at 8:08 p.m. ET, but the Sox and starting pitcher “nasty” Nate Eovaldi will be looking to force a decisive Game 7.
- Though the Astros’ offense is alive and well, don’t count out the Red Sox. This ain’t their first comeback rodeo.
🤸♀️⚽️🏈 Quick hits
🤸♀️Gymnastics: The world championships are underway in Kitakyushu, Japan, and Americans are already bringing home the hardware. With Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee and defending world champion Simone Biles out of the competition, Leanne Wong and Kayla DiCello came in second and third — behind Russian Angelina Melnikova — in the all-around event.
- Watch as they compete for gold in the individual events over the weekend.
⚽️Soccer: The Carli Lloyd goodbye tour continues, but last night’s exhibition was all Lindsey Horan. The Portland Thorns star notched her 100th cap (aka appearance) for Team USA last night and had a near-goal in the 0–0 draw with South Korea.
🏈Football: No Baker Mayfield, no problem. Though the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback (QB) is sidelined with a torn labrum and shoulder fracture, the Browns still pulled out the 17–14 win over the Denver Broncos, thanks to backup QB Case Keenum.

🏈 Put me in, coach
The GIST: Ever wonder what goes through a coach’s head before a big game? Now’s your chance to find out with our GISTer-only weekly fantasy football contest.
The game plan: It’s super easy to play. Sign up for our contest here and pay the small $2 entry fee. After registering, return to fanduel.com/gist to start assembling your team.
- You’ll have $60K in fantasy money to choose eight players and a defense. Remember: better players “cost” more, so choose wisely. Submit your picks by Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, then you’re all set. Go ahead and relax on the sidelines.
Eyes on the prize: While NFL coaches are competing for a shot at the Lombardi Trophy, GISTers are winning cold hard cash each week (like over $250 in cash prizes). Plus, there’s up to $5,000 and GIST swag up for grabs in our season-long leaderboard contest. This our Super Bowl.
- So what are you waiting for? Get in the game and start playing now. You got this, coach.
📺 Weekend watching
⛳️LPGA: BMW Ladies Championship — All weekend
- Squid Game, but make it golf. The Koreans are dominating this tournament on home soil, with only one American — Danielle Kang (who’s also of Korean descent) — cracking the top six yesterday. Watch it all on the Golf Channel.
🏎F1: U.S. Grand Prix — Sunday at 3 p.m. ET
- F1 is making its return to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, for the first time in two years, and no one is more excited about it than McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo. Catch it on ABC.
🏈NFL: Houston Texans vs. Arizona Cardinals — Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET
- Cards J.J. Watt and DeAndre Hopkins are facing their former team for the first time since their off-season trades. Watch as they look to continue their undefeated streak on CBS.
The GIST's Picks
- The other big Week 8 game? A rivalry matchup between USC and No. 13 Notre Dame tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. ET. It’ll be a good one, but we think the Irish will fight their way to victory.
