Album Daily Week #103 [November 1 - 5]

GoOoOoOoD Morning (or afternoon.... or evening) Album Daily subscribers!

Last week we gave you the undisputed list of the top 5 Halloween Songs. Well, last night at midnight the undisputed Queen of Christmas, the one and only Mariah Carey official declared it no longer the season of spook and officially the season of "All I Want for Christmas is YoOoOoOoOuUuUuU".

Check out this hilarious Tweet from Mariah that came through at exactly 12:00AM on November 1st. Now I don't know about you all, but in my household my parents wouldn't let us even think about touching the Christmas music until after Thanksgiving has come and went. Mariah is clearly incentivized to move that timeline up a good bit and in this pumpkin smashing bit she seems to be preparing to do exactly that. Although, she does put a disclaimer in at the end of the video that says "It's time to smash pumpkins and treat it as pie.... cause we still gotta get through Thanksgiving" so we can at least appreciate that Mariah has some respect for the rules of this game.

Now, turn your speakers up!

Rufus Du Sol

Album Cover 2
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: October 22nd, 2021
Top Tracks: Next To Me, On My Knees, Alive
Similar Artists: ARIZONA, Golden Features, Elderbrook

Two weeks ago I attended III Points Music Festival in Miami, Florida, the second day of which, was headlined by Rufus Du Sol. It was their first live performance after the release of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, Surrender. Idk maybe it was the 30ft tall LED panels, maybe it was the light rain the fell for 5 minutes during the middle of the performance, heck maybe it was even the residual smoke emanating from the crowd, but damn if it wasn’t one of the most magical performances I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t think of a better artist to venture into the realm of electronic music - sensational builds, celestial pulsating synths, and sing-a-long hooks. No cringe-worthy Chainsmokers remixes here, we’re talking hauntingly beautiful melodic house music. Check it out.

girl in red

Cover 2
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: April 30th, 2021
Top Tracks: Serotonin, You Stupid Bitch, midnight love
Similar Artists: Ashe, King Princess, Wallows

When your music becomes part of Tik-Tok code language, you know you are striking the right chords. That’s exactly what girl in red, Marie Ulven, has managed to accomplish in just a few short years as an artist. There are a lot of Billie comparisons that could be made as they both sing to the unique struggles of the millennial generation - embracing topics like mental health, queerness, and drug use head-on. She’s even the sole songwriter on the album and even co-produced a few of the songs with Eillish’s brother, Finneas. The first half of the album features the angsty punk-pop sounds girl in red fans have become accustomed to, while the second half reveals softer almost R&B style production. It’s an excellent listen … if if you’re not up to date with Tik-Tok slang :)

Cover 3
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: September 10th, 2021
Top Tracks: Boomerang, Love Came Down, Louie Bag
Similar Artists: Adele, Ari Lennox, H.E.R.

Yebba has one of those voices that seems incomprehensible. Surely no one actually can sing like that? However all of the riffs and spins you here on her 2021 album Dawn are real, and so is her impressive vocal range and nuanced lyrics. Last Week we featured Certified Lover Boy, the newest Drake album. If you gave that one a listen through you might have noticed there was one track that Champagne Papi seemed to be missing entirely from: “Yebba’s Heartbreak”. This isn’t the first time she has collaborated with some of the industry’s most prominent hip-hop and rap artists. That’s her voice you probably recognize from the backing vocals of Chance the Rapper’s “Same Drugs” and she pulls in A$AP Rocky and Smino for this latest album.

If you want to see what a powerhouse the Memphis native is check out this live performance of her song My Mind from a few years ago. Her voice is raw and connected and is a once in a generation rarity.
Guaranteed goosebumps.

Abhi vs The Universe

Abhi The Nomad

Cover 4
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: September 1st, 2021
Top Tracks: Extra Life, Flower Baby, Good Luck
Similar Artists: Felly, KOTA the Friend, MANWOLVES

Abhi vs The Universe is a cheery album. The type of music you’d hear on an Apple commercial as someone rides a nickel board down the boardwalks of a beach town. Abhi the Nomad, aka a “Brown guy who raps,” spends much of this album rapping over some funky beats and mixing in a few features that you most likely have never heard of before but just might go listen to their top 5 songs real quick to see what else is good.

The Raconteurs

Cover 5
Genre: Rock
Release Date: May 15th, 2006
Top Tracks: Steady, As She Goes, Level, Hands
Similar Artists: Foghat, The White Stripes, Deep Purple

We went back and dug this one back out of the mid 2000's as an album most definitely worth re-discovering. The Raconteurs are a classic “The” XYZ band from this era that plays guitar the way it’s supposed to be played, reminds you on Nirvana every once in a while, and plays hard enough to satisfy some heavy metal rock fans but not hard enough to scare away those on the fence.""

Turns out The Raconteurs band was Jack White’s (headman of The White Stripes) first musical collaboration. According to Rolling Stone, White, “vowed the White Stripes could never use a bassist, or any other interloper, because he didn’t want to kill the Stripes’ one-on-one spontaneity.” All bets are off as a Raconteur, though.
