The Best Place To Stay Rich
Did you know that South Dakota is now one of the world's best tax havens?
According to Oliver Bullough of The Guardian, a South Dakota trust is "the most potent force-field money can buy."
Here's why:
- South Dakota has no income tax, no inheritance tax, and no capital gains tax.
- The process requires three parties: a settlor, a trustee, and a beneficiary. Through the trust, a "settlor" gives assets to a "trustee" in South Dakota to look after and invest for a "beneficiary, usually a direct relative of the settlor."
- All three parties can legally claim that the money isn't theirs.
- The settlor and the beneficiary never have to set foot in South Dakota.
South Dakota also allows perpetual trusts, which mean that money that can remain untouchable and non-taxable for centuries.
US politicians like to boast that their country is the best place in the world to get rich, but South Dakota has become something else: the best place in the world to stay rich.
Interesting fact: The United States is the only major country not to sign on to the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), meaning they do not need to inform other governments about assets held by foreigners.

Know These Financial Metrics
Being a startup founder doesn’t always mean that you know how healthy your business’s finances are.
Ali Ladha, says that many businesses fail because founders don't see the full financial picture of their company.
Check out this thread which explains the financial metrics you should pay attention to.

✅ Snippets to Send You on Your Way
🔷 You.com takes on Google: The list of startups taking on Google search is starting to get somewhat lengthy. Brave is at it. So is Neeva. DuckDuckGo has been working on the matter. And now You.com has $20 million to help with its AI-driven search service. Download it and check out the radical interface on display.
🔷 $15M to track crypto shenanigans: According to TechCrunch, crypto risk monitoring is increasingly big business. Rug pulls, sandwich attacks, front running and flash loan attacks are rife in the crypto world, leading to Solidus Labs raising eight figures for its work in the market. It can detect manipulation and other types of market distortions that people care about, given just how much money is sloshing around the crypto markets these days.
🔷 Women investors outperform men: The world of investing has traditionally been seen as a boys' club, but more women than ever are taking the reins of their financial lives, and even outperforming their male counterparts. The Fidelity 2021 Women and Investing Study found that women are laser-focused on how to make their money work for them and are beating male investors by 40 basis points.

🔷 What is ROI?: Return on investment (ROI) allows you to measure the profitability of your investments. For investors, ROI tends to be calculated in strictly financial terms. How much capital did you invest and how much did you get back? For businesses, ROI is often calculated using different factors. Foundr put together a step-by-step method for calculating ROI, and the formulas to use.
🔷 Making Ethereum faster: Blockchain startup, Matter Labs, closed a $50 million Series B led by - you guessed it - Andreessen Horowitz. The company has developed a new Ethereum scaling solution that allows traffic to be moved from the central Ethereum blockchain to other chains, making transactions faster and cheaper. Why not just use a different chain? Well, because folks dig Ethereum, and where the developers go, so goes the progress of tech.
🔷 Mega e-commerce rollup play: Tired of these yet? Investors aren’t. Berlin-based Razor recently announced a $125 million round at a valuation north of $1 billion to keep buying up e-commerce brands. It’s a big play around the world that has raised roughly eleventy-seven gazillion dollars. It's notable that Razor's ambition is to integrate their investments into a wider operation and eventually move away from being wholly dependent on Amazon.
