Trevor McKendrick - Stop lying to yourself

Buenos dias!

Here’s a favorite quote of mine to kick off your week (original source unknown):

“Risk is the tariff paid to leave the shores of predictable misery”

Have a great week!

Trevor

If you have writer’s block maybe you should stop lying to yourself (article)

So good I wish I had written this!

“Maybe they’re right, and you’re wrong. And maybe the thing you write will be a crock of shit. But you won’t know unless you can bear to put it down. And if you can’t even type it—forget about publishing it, we’re just talking about the initial keyboard action—that means that you don’t want to know yourself.”

You can write. Today. Right now. Ideas are constantly running through your head.

But. You likely don’t put those words down because they’re not the words you aspire to be. Or maybe you don’t want to believe those words. Or, gasp, maybe the ideas just aren’t all that good

There’s so many reasons we tell ourselves we don’t do things, when really it’s often fairly straightforward.

Interview with Aella on escort work, rationalism, her polls, etc. (transcript)

See also: a thread of Aella’s most popular Twitter polls. If you didn’t think a poll question could be riveting you need to go follow Aella.

A sampling of questions:

“If you press the button, you never get hungry or need to eat again. Your energy levels remain stable, with no issues. This lasts for the rest of your life and is not reversible.”

“You have to get rid of one, undoing nearly all of its effects and 'reverting' back to before. You pick: A) Capitalism, or B) Feminism”

“Can someone both be a kind person and also hold the exact opposite of your political views?”

Monday’s Suck: more suicides on Monday than any other day of the week (twitter)

A twitter thread with visuals. Not a huge effect but definitely not zero.

How to go faster (article)

Specifically written by a developer for developers, BUT has highly relevant for anyone who isn’t.

One of the sections is “Make decisions based on goals”. Sounds super obvious but so few actually do this! Or people do it 10% of their time instead of 30% or 70%.

Another is ”Write stuff down”. This helps focus your thinking and makes you clear to yourself. Documenting decisions is also useful because you can go back and learn - you’re forced to be honest with yourself about why you did something.

Chris D’Elia on getting out of dark place (youtube)

10 minutes from a comedian in a Rich Sanchez costume talking about doing a set after a day of being in an emotionally bad place.
