GROWTH INSIGHTS | Growth plateau? Mix it up.
Growing an audience is hard.
Unless you want to pay to grow it, it's going to take time, energy, persistence and consistency.
"So why bother growing one?"
Once you have an audience—and one that likes and trusts you—you're able to do some incredible things. As long as you're providing them value, your audience is your ticket to optionality.
There are two main challenges that I've experienced growing an audience.
1) It's time consuming
2) Plateaus
Unless you're going viral on the regular, growing an audience is really time-consuming. You need to: a) create content that people want to consume, and b) you need to promote it make sure the right people find it.
Many get the first part right: they create content worthy of consumption.
But most people get the second part wrong: they don't promote it enough.
And once you've got a promotional rhythm down, you're going to face the next obstacle: you'll hit a plateau.
For example… I've been promoting this very newsletter on Twitter primarily over the past 10 months. While I could do a better job at taking my own advice above, I've managed to grow an audience from 721 followers on January 19, 2021 (Day 1 of launching this newsletter) to 3,800+ Twitter followers. I've gone from 0 subscribers to over 950.
What to do when the numbers start to stagnate?
You mix it up.
EXHIBIT A: Earlier this summer, I saw a subscriber plateau so I released a free guide on how to start, optimize, and promote your newsletter (it's no longer free, but it's here). That got me ~150 new subscribers. Trade-off: no money spent, but lots of time dedicated to creating a detailed, high-value, free resource.
EXHIBIT B: I saw another plateau this fall, so I paid $100 for an ad in Josh Spector's For The Interested newsletter. That $100 earned another 50+ subscribers. Trade-off: money spent but very little time or energy expended.
EXHIBIT C: I just launched The Growth Currency Ultimate Creator Database of Awesomeness! It's free and ungated (for now) so check it out 😀 This is a low-commitment way to engage with the Growth Currency⚡ brand and into my ecosystem. Trade-off: no money spent (yet), lots of time and energy.
