Get ready for the shock of your life—Apple just announced that it’s opening a Self Service Repair program next year. The company will tell customers how to repair their devices, sell authentic replacement parts, and even grant customers access to top-secret diagnostic tools.

This is a major step for Apple, a company that deserves much of the blame for today’s barely-repairable phones and laptops. But it’s not enough. And in some ways, the Self Service Repair program could benefit Apple more than it helps customers, small businesses, or the environment.

Check out our top story to learn more about Self Service Repair and to see what our friends at iFixit think of Apple’s foray into the DIY repair business.
