Oklahoma governor commutes inmate’s death sentence hours before execution. [Free read link]
New York Times (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 85% • 7 min read

Julius Jones was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in 2002. Advocates for Mr. Jones have argued that his defense lawyers failed him during his trial and that prosecutors relied too heavily on the testimony of a co-defendant who said that he had seen Mr. Jones commit the crime.
    ...
A state board voted twice to recommend that he be made eligible for parole. [Mr. Jones' execution] was scheduled less than a month after another death-row inmate in Oklahoma vomited and shook for several minutes as he died by lethal injection.
    ...
The governor was under mounting pressure from prominent figures who went beyond liberal critics of the death penalty. Those figures included the chairman of the American Conservative Union; the executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition; and several Republican state lawmakers. Oklahoma’s attorney general, John O’Connor, said he appreciated the condition that Mr. Jones never be released from prison.

Are nuclear power plants worth the risk?

498 votes, 72 comments

Context: Nuclear energy startup plans first power plant in rural Wyoming.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Next-generation reactors such as high temperature reactors and small modular reactors are currently being designed to be even safer than the already safe reactors currently being used in our power plants. What about nuclear waste? Recycle it. Currently, only 5% of energy is extracted from uranium in a typical light water reactor before the fuel is labeled "waste" and moved to storage. This spent fuel may be recycled and reused to extract most of the remaining 95% of the energy. This processed is currently banned in the US for nonproliferation reasons.

No - Nuclear power produces waste which remains harmful for - literally - thousands o...
