Kirby 30th Anniversary

๐Ÿ‘‹ Hey, here's issue #265 of Switch Weekly with your Nintendo round-up.

Last week most of the Nintendo community seemed to be discussing Mario Kart and what direction the series could head next. In amongst all that chatter I came across this interesting Twitter thread highlighting just what new things the mobile version, Mario Kart Tour, has introduced to the long running kart racer, and just how those additions and changes could play a part in any new console version. Despite what you may think of this free-to-play version, it's clear it hasn't been shy about trying a few new things. Worth a read I reckon.

It's a busy week on the eShop over the next seven days, as there's around 30 games landing on the Switch, including Windjammers 2 and the Shadow Man remaster. Full list below as ever.

Finally, for those of you new to the newsletter you may not be aware that I run an annual Nintendo Switch survey, asking questions about software owned, hardware wear and tear, what games folks want to see, and more. It will be returning next month for its fifth(!) year, along with fresh questions on things like the OLED model, N64 on NSO, and more. I've put together a new page on the Switch Weekly website bringing together all the results from years prior if that's of interest. Of course, if you have any thoughts for questions you think I should be asking this year please do feel free to hit reply to this email and let me know.

Catch you next week,
Chris โœŒ๏ธ

Nintendo's 2021 Report Card — How did Nintendo's 2021 stack up? I love anything like this that looks back and tries to guage the overall 'feel' for the year: "Nintendo has had a much, much stronger year in 2021 than it did in 2020. Although there was no Switch Pro, Switch OLED is still a half-decent hardware revision. More importantly, the games it put out over the course of 2021 was a strong lineup."

โ–ถ Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Copy Abilities and Co-op — Nintendo kicked the Kirby hype machine up a notch this week, sharing not only a new trailer but a release date too. This one is out in late March, and I gotta say, after being a bit nonplussed after seeing the first trailer, this one did a much better job of getting my attention — it's looking polished. I kinda get Mario Odyssey / 3D World vibes from it, and that can only be a good thing. The folks at Nintendo World Report did a deep dive into the trailer if you're after some analysis. (Here's the link you need if you wanna get your preorder in).

โ–ถ Pokémon Legends: Arceus – Extended gameplay video — Last week I shared a Japanese trailer, here's an English language version showing off 13 minutes of new Pokemon details — including crafting.

REVIEW Astroneer — This space adventure is "a small package that packs a lot of punch. There’s so much to dig into and explore that it’s easy to lose hours upon hours without batting an eye".

Alex Orona // Nintendo World Report

REVIEW Love 3 — I shared a review to this in last week's issue, but here's another that I just had to share. Super high praise: "Few games leave me speechless the way Love 3 has [..] the best pure indie platformer ever made, and, as of this writing, one of the ten best indies I’ve ever played. I can feel the love".

Cathy // Indie Gamer Chick

REVIEW Death's Door —"deserving of the hype".

Paul Roberts // Vooks

PREVIEW 'Infernax' blends the best of Zelda II and Castlevania II while skipping the flaws — This "retro-styled tribute has notable pedigree". It's out next month.

Thomas Whitehead // Nintendo Life

โ–ถ Balan Wonderworld is the Game of the Year — A lengthy video essay that dives into the negative discourse of 2021's "most unfairly maligned game", and a wider look at what truly constitutes a platformer.
