U.S. gains 467,000 jobs in January and hiring was much stronger at end of 2021 despite Omicron.
MarketWatch (Center) • Factual Grade 75% • 3 min read

The U.S. added 467,000 jobs in January. Economists polled by Wall Street had forecast 150,000 new jobs, but many investors were bracing for the first contraction in employment in more than a year because so many workers got sick from omicron last month. The unemployment rate rose to 4% from 3.9%.
    ...
Gains in December and November were also much bigger than initially reported, newly revised data show. The U.S. added 510,000 jobs in December instead of 199,000. And employment rose by 647,000 in November compared to the prior estimate of 249,000.
    ...
Businesses have a near-record 10.9 million job openings, for one thing. Many are so desperate to hire they are offering better pay, bonuses and other benefits. Over the past year wages have jumped 5.7% — the biggest increase in decades. The downside? Higher pay could feed already high U.S. inflation unless workers prove to be more productive in their jobs. Inflation is rising even faster than wages.

Should countries have boycotted the Beijing Winter Olympics?

Context: 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics begin.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - It pains me to say it, but yes, we should have. It would be a terrible punishment to the athletes who may only get one opportunity to compete at the Olympics in their lifetime, but it's far worse to condone the holocaust happening in western China. It's a difficult choice, because it would have politicized the action, but it would be an act of strong leadership to take such a stance. I also worry about the surveillance being applied to all athletes through the My2022 app as well as the general fairness of these games.

No - What effect would that have on China. All it would do is deprive the athletes a chance to complete. These are young men and women who have spent years to be able to be in the Olympics. Did boycotting the...
