Baby tooth proof of the first modern humans in Europe

We Homo sapiens are the only human species around these days. But scientists know that in the very distant past, our direct ancestors were sharing the planet with other hominids. Piecing together who was living where and when is an active area of research.

An interdisciplinary and international team of scientists announced findings this week that push back by 10 millennia the date that modern humans – essentially us – were living in Europe. Based on a painstaking analysis of artifacts and fossil teeth, as well as fine layers of soot left by fires, this group found evidence that Homo sapiens were making use of a cave in France 54,000 years ago. Just as startling: The modern humans moved in only a year after Neanderthals moved out. The researchers believe their discovery “rewrites the consensus story about when modern humans first made their way to Europe.”
