137YEARS ago today a 19 year old Englishman convicted of murder was due to be hanged when the malfunctioning gallows wouldn’t release the floor beneath him, authorities ascribed it to an act of God, he was removed from death row and his sentence commuted.

8.2ftWINGSPAN of a fossil embedded in limestone in Scotland recently discovered by scientists has now become the largest Jurassic Pterodactyl in history. It’s the largest animal that had ever flown with previous estimates of the Pterodactyl wingspan to be under 6ft.

128ftLONG Supersaurus holds the record for the largest dinosaur to have ever existed by length on land, new research from 2021 found it could have been up to 137ft long which is the equivalent length of around 14 African elephants.

85ftLONG Ichthyosaur found in southwestern England is believed to be the largest dinosaur by length which ever existed in water. The dolphin shaped creature was almost as big as a blue whale and roamed the planet 205m years ago.

27EU member states agreed a range of anti-Russia measures targeting all 351 members of Russia's upper house and 27 individuals. 5 banks have had assets frozen in the UK and 3 Russian billionaires hit with travel bans. Germany halted a €10B gas pipeline project with Russia immediately. The U.S has cut off Russia's government from Western financing. 

1PERSON has found dead in a submerged car and 10 others are reportedly missing on Wednesday after heavy rain caused flash flooding in eastern Australia and set off a string of emergency warnings up and down the Pacific coast. Almost half a metre of rain has fallen on some parts of the state in the last 24 hours.

101KSQ KM of the Amazon rainforest - more than 3x the size of Belgium - is currently under threat by 570 companies globally who have filled for permission to begin work in areas affecting 260 indigenous lands; almost half are for gold mining.

1HOSTAGE taken by an Amsterdam gunman in an Apple store was ultimately freed unharmed after a several hour standoff. The botched robbery demanding large sums of crypto-currency ended when the gunman ran from the store and was intentionally knocked down by a police vehicle. A robot searched the man for explosives while he was down before officers arrested him.

SHOULD-KNOW

3MEN convicted of killing jogger Ahmaud Arbery in the US state of Georgia in 2020 have now been found guilty of all 3 federal hate crimes put to them. Jurors found the defendants targeted Arbery because of his race. They may be sentenced to life in prison, in addition to the life sentences received in January.

8CURRENT and former Peloton employees have provided information about “Project Tinman”; a plan to conceal known corrosion on the bikes and send them to customers who had paid between $1,495 and $2,495. Peloton has argued it affected ‘non visible’ parts and they did not affect the product’s integrity.

9%FOOD INFLATION in Kenya for January alone - far higher than the overall 5% national inflation rate - means poorer citizens, for whom food is 36% of their overall spend, are struggling to survive. Wide spead government protests are taking place on social media.  

7.5MCITIZENS in the city of Hong Kong have been ordered by it’s government to partake in compulsory testing as the region battles surging coronavirus infections. Residents will have to undergo three rounds of tests starting in mid-March.

28SQUAD members of the women’s USA national soccer team filed a discrimination in March 2019 over equal pay to the mens team. Now the governing body US Soccer has pledged equal pay across all competitions and the women’s team will now receive $24m (£17.7m) in damages.

9KYEAR OLD shrine has been discovered at a remote Neolithic site in Jordan's eastern desert by a team of Jordanian and French archaeologists. This sheds an entirely new light on the symbolism and artistic expression of unknown Neolithic populations.
