Is “The Joke” by Brandi Carlile the greatest song ever?
Americana aria opens with sublime piano and lilting strings. Brandi Carlile strums “The Joke” to life with her acoustic guitar and trembling vocals, singing through the memories of all the forgotten people. Co-written with producer Dave Cobb and recorded in RCA Studio A in Nashville. It was released in 2017 as the lead single of her sixth album “By The Way, I Forgive You”. As the song swoons and builds and soars, Brandi’s voice strengthens its resolve from chorus to chorus. Giving voice and power to the marginalized and vulnerable. Every time I hear it, I think of my younger brother who died far too young. I see you tugging on your shirt. Trying to hide inside of it. And hide how much it hurts.
