Sarah Mirk

“Comics have the unique power to make the invisible visible.”

Sarah Mirk believes that comics journalism has the power to challenge the dominant narratives maintained by those in power. Her graphic novel Guantanamo Voices depicts 10 interviews she conducted with people who have spent time at Guantanamo Bay prison, a site where the U.S. government exercises heavy censorship and control over what information gets released. In her CreativeMornings/Portland talk, Mirk explains how comics can travel through space and time, winding their way around suppressed images, and fill in the gaps of the past and its emotional toll. Watch Sarah Mirk’s illuminating testimony to what she witnessed in Cuba and discover how she makes the invisible visible.

Photography is an extraordinary outlet for creativity and for expanding our vision of the world, no matter what your creative practice or business is. But gear – and expertise – can be prohibitive barriers to entry or leveling up. That’s why we’re so excited to welcome MPB to our CreativeMornings family. They put used photography and video equipment into more hands, sustainably.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing powerful stories by MPB. Today, meet some of the visual storytellers at MPB and discover what inspires their creativity.
