It's Tax Day for Battleground! Trying something new...
Battleground is a reader-supported publication. Consider supporting the newsletter through Buy Me A Coffee. Hey Everyone, It’s Tax Day for Battleground! Unfortunately, that means no new content for today as I drown myself in paperwork and tax filing software. So instead, I thought I’d test out a more traditional newsletter style and share out some of the news clips I’ve read over the past few days. The Week In PoliticsAlaska: Alaska will hold two elections for the US House this year after the recent death of Rep. Don Young. The first, a special election, will be held on June 11 and Sarah Palin headlines the huge pack of 51 candidates. (Anchorage Daily News) Arizona: Governor Doug Ducey last week signed a law banning all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. The law mirrors a recently passed law in Mississippi that’s facing a SCOTUS challenge. (KNXV/ABC-15) California: Tesla is being sued by 4,000 current and former Black workers in one of the largest discrimination suits in the country. Hear from the workers themselves about how Tesla’s failure to address complaints led to a segregated workplace. (LA Times) National: Confused by what the Republican party actually stands for in 2022? Mike Pence released his own version of a party platform and it’s… well… you’ll see. 🤮 (Original document) National: A super-majority of Americans support marijuana legalization (68%) and the House just voted to legalize it. Yet nearly every House Republican voted against it and Senate Republicans are aiming to prevent the bill from becoming law. Why? (Gallup, TheHill, Reuters) Culture War: Conservatives are pushing to allow lawyers to bring handguns into courtrooms in states like Kentucky, Arkansas, and Nevada. What could possibly go wrong? (Courier Journal, Arkansas Times, Pahrump Valley Times) Substack Spotlight: The White PagesA rare anti-racism newsletter by white people, for white people. While centering the voices of marginalized peoples is vital in anti-racism work, we also need to lean on our allies to spread progressive messaging in spaces that we cannot ourselves. The White Pages is written by Garrett Bucks and aims to help white people embrace and employ anti-racism tactics throughout their lives. I’ve loved reading his recent posts because he challenges well-meaning white progressives as much as he pushes against bigoted conservatives. He does a fantastic job of speaking to White anxieties and grievances without centering their experiences. One of my favorite pieces is his dissection of both how and why the anti-CRT movement has been so effective politically. Definitely give his newsletter a read and consider subscribing if you find his content inspirational! Did you like this format? If so, hit the button below! (The button will just take you back to the Battleground home page but it’ll let me know how many people have clicked!) A gift for me is a gift for you!
