Expert Roundups: Stick a Fork in Them; They’re Done by Joshua Hardwick

Expert roundups have no real downsides for contributors. It rarely takes more than a few minutes to answer the creator’s question and, in return, contributors get exposure, a backlink, and a nice egoboost.

But for creators and readers of roundups, there are some issues:
  1. Genuine experts are inundated with requests for roundups, which means they have to pick and choose which ones to contribute, making it harder for publishers to get quotes.
  2. The format rarely aligns with search intent.
  3. Experts rarely link to roundups they’re featured in, which defeats the purpose since many SEOs create roundups for links.
  4. Experts rarely share roundups they’re featured in.

Google’s algorithm is extremely complex, and how it exactly works is not public information. It’s believed that there are well in excess of 200 ranking factors—and nobody knows them all.

That said, Google does give hints on how you can rank well in its results. If we look at Google’s “How Search Works” page, it directly reveals some of Google’s most prominent ranking factors:
  • Backlinks
  • Freshness
  • Keyword mentions
  • User experience
  • Topical authority

How to Find and Fix Orphan Pages (The Right Way) by Kayle Larkin

Orphan pages are pages that search engines may have difficulty discovering because they have no internal links from elsewhere on your website.

Here’s how to find them:
  1. Gather a list of crawlable URLs using Ahrefs’ Site Audit (free in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools)
  2. Find all the URLs with hits using analytics tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console
  3. Cross-reference crawlable URLs (from Site Audit) and URLs with hits (from GA and GSC)
Finally, use this decision tree to figure out how to fix these orphan pages.
