Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory

“We assert our individuality as something that adds to our collectivity.”

Folklore has shaped Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory’s life. In conversation with CreativeMornings/Vancouver, Laakkuluk shares how, since childhood, she was filled with so much story, from the song after which her community named her, to the different stories of the sun, moon, and the Northern Lights her parents compared with one another across Inuit homelands, to uaajeerneq, the Greenlandic mask dance she performs. These stories breathe life into us and the communities we belong to. Watch Laakkuluk’s poetic talk and be spellbound.

Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory is a kalaaleq (Greenlandic Inuk) performance artist, poet, actor, curator, storyteller and writer. She is the winner of the 2021 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s highest honor for contemporary art. For Laakkuluk, uaajeerneq is an effort to decolonize the self and the culture, a celebration of body and flesh, a loving and respectful exploration of humanity, and ferocious call to action.
