Well the post pandemic recovery didn’t last long did it? Grim reading from the IMF, whose World Economic Outlook report outlines the dampening effect of war, economic sanctions, climate change, and ongoing pandemic, which of course is still going on even though we are doing our best to ignore it. It’s a 200 page monster, so hard to digest but one which I suspect we have to download and review. Quick shout out to folks like Lyn Alden, whose investment blog balances technical expertise with lay persons accessibility. Keep an eye on all this stuff, because as recruiters we have to know where the wind is going to be blowing. And many thanks to Mary Kokolina for sharing this, on the LinkedIn post on the topic.

Amazing post from brainfooder Andrew Stetsenko 🇺🇦, who is currently spending most of his time running humanitarian supplies for his countrymen and women fleeing invasion (continue to support Andrew’s fundraising campaign, here) and yet still finds the time to outline all the resources a software engineer needs in order to relocate for a job.

Two ways recruiters can use this post: firstly as a list of resources for your own employers relocation strategy and secondly, as nurture content for those software engineers who promised to keep in touch with.

The mission of every in-house recruiter is to build the recruiting capacity of the entire business - get everyone contributing to the hiring effort. This is as good an example of how you can do it. Excellent post by Tereza Machackova on how to organise ‘sourcing jams’. Must read folks

There probably isn’t a CEO in today’s world that doesn’t proclaim that their people are their most important priority. How they communicate the message so often doesn’t land. This video message from Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci is different. Rare transparency + leadership + the fact he has done it at all. Company culture is a domain that is dominated by people in HR / TA. But what do employees actually think about it? Important survey conducted by which centres the employees rather than HR. Spoiler alert: some of their opinions will chafe against our cherished conventions…

Super interesting report from Burning Glass on 51 million job postings, showing a trend of employers moving away from degree requirements and toward more specific skills listings in job ads, the two appearing to be closely correlated. Burning Glass report to download here, pretty essential for recruitment advertisers, I’d say. HBR have a summary post here for easier reading.

Let me just start by saying this is the single best thing I’ve read in ages 🤣. I’ll also age myself by saying I used to recruit these folks back in the early days of Web1.0. Webmastering a long dead job, but one which manages to give us a clue on what the future of good work looks like, jobs with impact + variety. It’s a wonderful lament

With TikTok overtaking Youtube as the most app on which we spend most time, it might be worthwhile for us to start thinking about actually using it as source site for candidates. Not easy to do, given the nature and architecture of the platform, but this technique has some promise, though it is a bit technical (you are going to need to know a bit of Python..). One for the technical sourcers to play around with, have a go here

Some great content being created by vendors at the moment - I think the content teams are really finding the ‘content / audience fit’. Even better that most of them seem to be friends of Brainfood! Another remote job board, this time also including the companies tech stacks. So obviously focused on engineering roles & candidates - useful for recruiters to identify potential business development or candidate source sites. Check it out.

So this is a post which could benefit from ‘just saying the thing’. It takes a little too long to get there, but the concept is exciting once it does - a VC built as DAO (decentralised autonomous organisation) as a structuralist remedy to a non-diversity.

Last couple of weeks I’ve featured a number of posts which provided evidence for the ‘innovation advantage’ of on-premise teams. So here is a more optimistic take - there is such an advantage, but it seems that advances in communication & collaboration tech is gradually reducing this deficit. It’s a sad headline, isn’t it? ‘Second chance, but only because we are desperate’ really doesn’t address the deep misjudgements we have about causes of crime. At least the candidate short market has good news for some members of our community; we need to build on this and hire the formerly incarcerated without prejudice.

Very decent crowdsource from our buddies Down Under - a simple website showcasing the parental leave policies of a number of organisations, with a form to fill in at the bottom if you want your organisations data to be included. You can imagine this work being commoditised very quickly in future but for the early few pioneers there may be entrepreneurial fortunes to be made.

We….kind of know why. People who are good at their jobs routinely get promoted into bigger jobs they’re bad at or they have never been trained to do. A widely acknowledged problem but do we have any answers? Have a listen here.

Did you know Gitlab CEO Sid Sijbrandij ran a youtube channel? I didn’t until I saw this, which made me think it was worth highlighting to the community. Gitlab has been of course, the poster child for the pandemic economy, so maybe worth paying attention to what the CEO has to say…

We don’t talk about menopause nearly enough, and as a man I personally grateful to the likes of Katrina Collier for bringing into public discourse what might once have been a personal challenge.
