Is “Rapture” by Blondie the greatest song ever?
Funky guitars and church bells chime over an insistent new wave syncopated beat. Debbie Harry’s preening, keening vocals sing about wall-to-wall nightclubbers and distracted twenty-four-hour shoppers. Then breaks into scattergun rap with a nod to pioneering hip-hop DJs Fab 5 Freddy and Grandmaster Flash. And the parking lot. And a man from Mars. Who shoots you dead and eats your head. Cryptic and apocalyptic. Hypnotic. Written by Debbie and then-partner Chris Stein after attending an underground rap party in the South Bronx. Produced by Mike Chapman in 1980 for the band’s fifth album “Autoamerican”. Recorded at United Western Recorders in Los Angeles. “Rapture” was the first number-one song to feature rap vocals and the first music video with rap music to be aired on MTV. And what a music video. A downtown set in an uptown film studio with everyone prancing through a nightlife overflowing with bandmembers and lovers and friends and freeloaders and voodoo dancers and hip-hop artists and a top-hatted man in a white tuxedo tap-dancing into a club. Where Jean-Michel Basquiat is playing a nonchalant DJ. You go out at night eatin’ cars. You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too. Mercurys and Subaru. And you don’t stop, you keep on eatin’ cars. Then, when there’s no more cars you go out at night. And eat up bars where the people meet. Face to face, dance cheek to cheek. If you liked this post from New Old Age, why not share it? |
