ANOTHER RED DAY IN THE BOOKS: This should come as no surprise to folks who read this newsletter. Remember that markets are forward looking. The majority of earnings represent the quarter between January 1st - March 31st … meaning that the war in Ukraine (February 24th ) & China covid lockdowns (March 28th), only represent 1-2 thirds of current earnings reported. Even so, the effects for many businesses were not & are not instant, although, sure to been seen in the numbers next earnings season.

INFLATION PRESSES ON: Yesterdays gas/deasil prices hit another all time high & President Biden implemented additional restrictions on oil & gas production. China, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, & India have either curtailed exports of their grains or halted them altogether. Inputs imported from China are drying up … & what’s left is going to the highest bidder. Bird Flu is affecting poultry prices worldwide. There is still a housing shortage, whereas the demand remains higher than the supply produced despite higher mortgage rates. Apartment rent continues to increase with housing as well. Used vehicles are coming off all time highs, however new vehicles aren’t cooling at all. The trucker shortage continues leading to increased shipping prices & scarcity of shipping availability. For parents, baby formula remains scarce. The Biden Administration has artificially increased the demand for corn by allowing E15 to persist into the high demand spring/summer months, affecting everything from cooking oil, to corn starch, to corn syrup, to cattle feed. And if this weren’t enough, fertilizer & pesticide prices are at an all time high. Inflation is no longer chipping away a low & middle income paychecks, its gouging low & middle income paychecks … & that affects purchasing power. If you think this is bad now … just wait until next quarter … when all these factors drain savings accounts. Ladies & Gents, … watch the retail sales numbers today (0830ET)… & pay closer attention to the inflation adjusted retail sales than the raw numbers!

NEXT BIG ECONOMIC NUMBERS:

• Retail Sales 0830ET Today: Consensus +0.7%

• Housing Starts & Building Permits 0830ET Wednesday 18th May: Consensus 1.783m/1.813m respectively.

• Existing Home Sales 1000ET Thursday 19th MAY: Consensus 5.56m

NEWS THAT WILL MOVE MARKETS:

• Quite a few Fed Governors speaking this week. Lets not ignore the fact that, more often than not, folks read too much into their statements.
