Johanna Renoth - 📣 An Inspiring Story from Lush
Today, let's talk inspiration!
I'm going to share the story of a company that decided to leave socials for their marketing entirely. If you want something uplifting and motivating, read on.
If It Feels Weird to Walk Away from Socials...
In the beginning, it may seem really weird to even consider leaving socials behind - or cut way down on it for your marketing.
After all, that's what everyone is doing right now, it seems. And why would you want to do something that's outside of conventional wisdom?
Business is always a little bit outside of conventional wisdom.
When you sell a product, bring something new into the world, or even tell your friends and family that you're going down this route, you're leaving conventional avenues.
It's par for the course.
And yet, over the past decade social media marketing became the norm - a paradigm - that we seem to have forgotten that businesses have existed successfully for millenia before social media marketing.
If you're intrigued by opting out of socials and are feeling a bit nervous about how it could work otherwise, I've got some inspiation for you.
The Story of Lush
Lush, the soap and bath bomb company opted out of marketing themselves on social media entirely in the fall of 2021, when Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen shared just how much of a mess and how harmful Facebook is.
You can read more about why Lush did what they did here.
I think the quote below from Lush's statement hits the nail on the head.
We All Deserve to Switch Off
You, too, as a business owner, freelancer, creative, solopreneur - however you choose to identify yourself - deserve to switch off and have a life offline where you enjoy the products of your work.
I think that we're just seeing the beginning of the no/low social tide as people are becoming more and more aware of the downsides of socials.
Let the story of Lush be your inspiration to consider some changes.
Sending glitter,
