Gil Scott-Heron was a college student when he penned his iconic and timeless signature song-poem.

It was titled after a 1960s Black Power slogan and written in response to The Last Poets’ spoken-word piece from 1970, “When the Revolution Comes”. Its main subject is the lack of media coverage of the plight of African-American communities. A true poet feels what their community feels.

This incendiary song-poem was a precursor to hip hop and rap. First recorded in 1970 as spoken word accompanied by sparse congas and bongo drums. Then re-recorded at RCA Studios in New York City in 1971 with a full band, jazz-funk bass and fleeting flute. “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” was the B-side to Gil’s first single, “Home Is Where the Hatred Is”.

For more than half a century, Gil’s sharp commentary about feeble TV advertising slogans, shows and performers and politics has been broadcast, sampled and streamed. It’s never felt more real.

The revolution will not go better with Coke.

The revolution will not fight germs that may cause bad breath.

The revolution will put you in the driver’s seat.

The revolution will not be televised.

The revolution will be no re-run, brothers.

The revolution will be live.
