The GIST - A war of words
We made it!
Hope you had a better week than whoever’s managing LIV Golf’s PR. Let’s tee this weekend off with some good vibes and sports news.

Quote of the Day
We want equal pay, and we're not willing to settle for anything less. (...) Our core message is that gender inequity needs to come to an end globally.
— Following in the USWNT’s footsteps, Portland Thorns star Janine Beckie highlights the CanWNT’s call for Canada Soccer to show their commitment to women, aka the current Olympic gold medalists. It’s only fair.
🎓🥎 NCAA softball: Mission accomplished
The GIST: For the second straight year (and fifth time in the last nine seasons), the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners are your NCAA softball national champions, the final exclamation point on an incredible record-setting season. Dominant doesn’t even begin to cover it.
How they did it: After throttling Texas 16–1 in Wednesday’s Game 1, Oklahoma had to (briefly) battle for the title last night, rallying from a two-run deficit to take down the Longhorns 10–5 and sweep the Women’s College World Series (WCWS).
- The Sooners got it done with the long ball, as junior catcher Kinzie Hansen blasted a three-run homer in the fifth inning to open up the lead before senior infielder Grace Lyons added a three-run shot of her own in the sixth. Sheesh.
- The Most Outstanding Player? Home run queen Jocelyn Alo, of course. Perhaps the best hitter college softball has ever seen, the two-time Player of the Year graduates with two national titles, an incredible legacy and a bright future ahead — she was the No. 1 pick in last month’s Athletes Unlimited softball draft.
The bigger picture: As thrilling as the on-field action was, the off-field impact was just as exciting. Multiple record-breaking crowds took in the WCWS action, including a record 12,257 fans at last night’s tilt.
- Plus, the WCWS aired on ABC for the first time with Wednesday’s Game 1 pulling in a whopping 1.4 million viewers. Amazing what happens when you put women’s sports on TV.
🏀 NBA Finals: Keepin’ it classy
The GIST: The NBA Finals have been a war of words as much as they’ve been a battle on the boards, and now the Golden State Warriors (trailing 2-1) will be looking to settle the score on the Boston Celtics’ hardwood tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
Wednesday’s Game 3: After being routed in Game 2, the Celtics responded with a statement win of their own, topping the Warriors 116–100. Golden State’s Steph Curry netted 31 points, but Boston’s trio of Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart — who notched 27, 26 and 24 points, respectively — was just too much to handle.
- Another issue for the Warriors? Foul trouble. Starter Draymond Green fouled out for the second time this series (yes, they’ve played only three games) while scoring just two points. At least he didn’t mince words about his performance.
Tonight’s Game 4: The biggest question mark? How Steph Curry will play. While he’s expected to dress, the Warriors star suffered a foot injury in Game 3 and it’s unclear how it’ll impact his game.
- If Chef Curry can still cook up some magic, this thing will be all tied up heading back to The Bay. But if Boston’s defense puts on the clamps like they did in the fourth quarter of Game 3, the Cs will be one win away from the title. Dun, dun, dun…
🏒🎓👟⛳️🏎️ Quick hits
🏒 NHL: With last night’s 3–1 Game 5 victory over the NY Rangers, the Tampa Bay Lightning are now up 3-2 in the series. Can they close things out at home on Saturday at 8 p.m ET to claim the Eastern Conference title and advance to their third-straight Stanley Cup Final? Or will we be blessed with a Game 7?
🎓👟NCAA Track & Field: The beat keeps runnin’, runnin’ in Eugene, Oregon, where athletes are competing for individual and team glory at the season-ending championship meet. The highlight so far? Notre Dame senior Dylan Jacobs overcame a fall to win the 10,000m title on Wednesday. (Literally) down, but never out.
⛳️ LPGA: Get ready to GTL — golf, tan, laundry — because the LPGA tour is heading to the Jersey Shore for this weekend’s ShopRite LPGA Classic. Top contenders include world No. 1 Jin Young Ko, defending champ Céline Boutier and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, fresh off a fifth place finish at last week’s U.S. Women's Open.
🏎️ F1: The boys are heading to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix (GP), the eighth race of the season. And it could be the start of a hot streak for defending champion Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez, who also won the most recent GP in Monaco. Meanwhile, his teammate Max Verstappen will be looking for a big finish to retain his spot atop the standings. Vroom, vroom.

The GIST's Picks
With Under Armour. Did you know that women account for 40% of sports participants, but women’s sports receive only 4% of all sports coverage? The 50th anniversary of Title IX, prohibiting sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools, is just around the corner and clearly, there’s still work to do.
- Luckily, Under Armour is here to help empower the next generation of sports stars through their Access to Sport program. Check it out.*

The LA Angels. A night after they played Nickelback for every walk-up song, the Halos defeated the Boston Red Sox 5–2 last night to finally snap their 14-game losing streak. A true rockstar move.
