Hey friend,

Happy June, Happy Pride! And congrats to all the little ones (and big little ones) who made it through another school year.

I'm a bit burnt out (yup, the Katy Perry Vegas hangover) and skipped this week's essay. Last week's response to the Deferred Life Plan was bonkers, surpassing how to prioritize (when everything is a priority) as 2022's most read post.

Does your to-do list need a refresh? Are you struggling to apply the principles from David Allen's GTD productivity system? Join us on June 14th as we deconstruct How to Get Things Done in 2022.

My friend Josh Spector runs a fantastic newsletter for solopreneurs and creative entrepreneurs looking to scale their businesses and grow their audiences. It's a must-read for me and I highly recommend subscribing!

Running from ourselves

6 minutes | @AprilRinne

What’s the relationship between impostor syndrome and “running harder” (aka the path to burnout)? Is there a stigma that comes from slowing down? Or does it come from intertwining our identities and achievements? Ironically, slowing down often creates the space for more time. (Make sure you check out April’s book Flux: 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change.)

I experimented with not drinking for a year. Then started again.

6 minutes | @nateliason

Cutting out drinking has undeniable benefits — no hangovers, lighter bodyweight, and better skin. But it can also mean missed opportunities to enjoy special occasions fully (like practicing abstinence at a vineyard in Tuscany). What if the real problem isn’t the alcohol, but the need for an external tool to relax? Nat’s solution, a simple rule: put alcohol use in the calendar 3 days in advance so neither can be the solution to a stressful day.

Addressing employee burnout: Are you solving the right problem?

19 minutes | McKinsey Health Institute

The pandemic has exacerbated a longstanding challenge to companies: employee health and well-being. As a result, lots of employers have increased spending on mental health and wellness (yoga, meditation apps, well-being days, etc). But these individual solutions do not solve a systemic issue; individual resilience doesn’t make up for a systemically unsupportive workplace. Some questions employers should be asking themselves to address the root cause: Do we treat employee mental health and wellbeing as a strategic priority? Do we effectively address toxic behaviors?

Using a "leverage list"

4 minutes | @george_mack

Leverage lists are better than to-do lists. But how can we distinguish between the two? If once the action item is complete it will reappear again repetitively, it’s a “to-do” and thus a liability. If once complete, your future list is forever shorter and easier, it’s a leverage list item and it’s thus an asset. Invest in assets, avoid liabilities.

Just do one thing

2 minutes | Oliver Burkeman

Most of us know David Allen’s “two-minute rule” by now; if you come across a task that would take under two minutes to complete, just do it now. Meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein offers a delightful twist on this practice. If ever you find yourself considering doing something generous for someone, follow through on it in that moment. If you think you might like to send a message to a friend expressing gratitude, just do it. The time it takes to add to your to-do list and perfect it is burdensome; taking action is actually the easier option.
