About this free report

Behind the business

From the beginning, we've been clear on the value we provide: M&A data.

The question has been, how will we share that data? What format will our readers most appreciate?

Our eventual goal is to offer access to our full database through a searchable portal. But first, we're sharing slices of that database through reports.

Thinking through this first project, we wanted to include a spreadsheet. But there are so many ways to deliver spreadsheets. Should we go with AirTable, Excel or Google Sheets?

In the end, we decided on Google Sheets, for a few reasons:

• It's easy to share a live version of a spreadsheet (so we can update it in the future as needed)
• It's easy for you to create your own copy and add to it or manipulate the data
• While AirTable is gaining traction (and we love the tool; we use it for our database), the small business community is more familiar with Google Sheets
• My husband Ben is a Google Sheets expert and can help us make each sheet do exactly what we want it to do

Then there's the story piece of the report. We don't just provide numbers; we put them into context.

This is especially important for private sales, because we don't have all the numbers you might have for a publicly-traded company. When the seller isn't willing to share exactly how much they sold for, for example, we can still look at other metrics, like revenue at sale, size of their customer base or audience, team makeup and more.

While there are so many ways to showcase stories, we chose to create a beautiful PDF that's easy for everyone to download and review.

Even with all the work we put into it, we consider this first report an experiment. We hope to learn, is it helpful for our audience? Did the format and delivery resonate? Is there anything our readers want to see differently next time?

We'll take this all into consideration, then tweak our next report based on your feedback.
