Trevor McKendrick - Night owls vs morning people

Hello & good morning - I hope you all have a terrific week.

Trevor

Author Brandon Sanderson talks about his work schedule (youtube clip)

Linking to this because he’s the only Successful Person I’ve seen admit publicly that he wakes up at 12 noon.

I am much less productive in the morning and have always been sort of a night owl. If at some point we discover that one’s ideal sleeping schedule is mostly determined by our DNA I wouldn’t be surprised at all. I haven’t read it yet but a book called Internal Time is supposed to talk about this.

Brandon also fits in 2 writing sessions, and plays video games from 2am-4am.

My First Million podcast interviews Dharmesh Shah, cofounder/CTO of Hubspot (podcast)

One of their better interview episodes. Quickly becoming a podcast favorite, mostly because IMO they talk like real human beings and ask interesting questions.

Tyler Cowen rant on doing more, better, faster science (article)

“How many managers of scientific labs receive any management training at all, even in the basics? On a scale of 1 to 10, how well are most labs or non-profit scientific ventures run? I’ve asked a number of people in the hard and biological sciences this question, and more often a laugh is the response, rather than a citation of a very specific number. I’ve never heard anyone say they are run just great.”

Sometimes all you need to accomplish or change something is intent & will. American institutions seem to totally lack this will recently. (Or, possibly, they have for a long time, and the pandemic just revealed it.)

I’m optimistic though. When you decide to change something, the first step IMO is giving your idea a target, via a name. That Progress Studies is now a named thing is a HUGE step towards solving problems like the ones Tyler mentions and many more.

(IMO the easiest way to experience the power of a named idea is to start a company. You slap a brand name on the random idea you’ve been talking to your friends about, and suddenly everyone in your social circle is using that name when they talk to you, and with each other about you & what you’re working on. It’s fascinating & fun to watch!)
