Issue 225 - Farewell and godspeed Andrej!

Andrej Karpathy

Farewell and godspeed Andrej!
If you have been a subscriber for a while, you sure by now know who Andrej Karpathy is, but in case you don't, Andrej has been really important to the evolution of Autopilot, Full Self-Driving, and the entire area of AI at Tesla. He's worked there for five years and directed the Autopilot team at first and the AI team more recently.

I've been a Tesla owner for almost five years now, and I've been able to experience firsthand how much better Autopilot has become through the years. Five years ago my car didn't even use all the cameras for Autopilot and had trouble even staying in its lane. While this has not all been Andrej, he has been a core contributor to the team and enabled a lot of brilliant minds to shine under his leadership.

I certainly will miss Andrej at Tesla and seeing his awesome presentations, the Tesla Autopilot team is amazing and Andrej is too.

Thank you for everything that you have given to the Tesla community, we wish you the best in your future endeavors Andrej!

Software updates

iOS app update v.4.11.0 now shows work charging rates as well
If you pay to charge at work and you use iOS, not Android yet, you can now configure the rate at your work location and the charge stats will count those accordingly.

Severe weather warnings at the top of the directions box πŸ“·

Another small but important improvement. In 2022.16.3, if your Tesla knows that there is some severe weather in your route, it will display it at the top of the direction box.

Your Tesla can now self-diagnose problems while scheduling service appointments πŸ“Ή
When requesting a service appointment in certain categories, now the app triggers the car diagnostics and informs you when a fault is present and service is required.

Steam integration coming to our Teslas
In a response to John from TOSV, Elon confirmed that there is a Steam integration in progress, and he expects a demo to be available next month.

FSD

Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta 10.13 release notes πŸ“·
FSD Beta 10.13 isn't out to the public yet, but we can see the release notes from the employee version in this tweet. A lot of the notes are related to creeping for visibility and unprotected left turns, with a special mention to Chuck Cook, who we have featured in the newsletter multiple times before.

FSD Beta v11 hopefully end of next month
We all know Elon time, so I don't expect this to be the end of next month, but it's great to hear that they are making progress in what is called v11, the unification of the FSD Beta and the highway Autopilot.

Supercharging

Tesla opened more than one new Supercharger station every day in China in June
Only in June, Tesla added 32 stations in 25 Chinese cities, adding a total of 120 Supercharger stalls. Tesla needs to keep expanding its charging network to keep up with the volume of cars sold, and needs to do it even faster!

v4 Superchargers are here
The plans for new upcoming stations in Danvers, MA, reveal aspects of the future v4 Superchargers. One of the main differences seems to be they have longer cables, maybe for non-Tesla EVs?

Model Y & Plaid

Tesla Model Y structural battery is super rigid but has zero repairability πŸ“Ή
As Sandy Munro continued tearing down the Made in Texas Model Y, he keep being impressed by its engineering. One discovery the folks at Munro have made is that, according to him, the structural battery has zero repairability, which isn't good.

FeynLab Self Heal Lite & PPF install in a Model S Plaid πŸ“Ή
In case you missed this, check out a brand new Model S Plaid getting the best protection with a PPF front coverage and FeynLab Self Heal Lite ceramic coating installs to keep its dark paint looking its absolute best– long-term. (Pst! Check out Feynlab's Self Heal Plus).
