Hot rod. Electric vehicle sales are accelerating in the US. While it took almost 8 years for Americans to buy their first million EVs, it took just 2.5 years to reach the next million in sales. In the 10 months that followed, Americans bought half a million more EVs. While this represents a fraction of total vehicle sales, that could soon change. The race for EV market share is on.

A little birdie told me. Halfway through the year, retail tech investors are pulling back on big late-stage rounds. But median funding for mid- and early-stage deals is on the up in 2022 YTD compared to 2021. Early-stage deals still make up over 60% of all retail tech investment activity. There’s an app for that. Consumers in the US spent more on non-gaming apps than on gaming apps on Apple’s App Store for the first time in June 2022. Subscriptions — a model non-gaming apps have increasingly adopted — are partly behind the boost. We looked at the rise of the subscription economy here.

Say no more. Over one-third of US workers say their employer has done nothing if they or their co-workers did not show up to work in person as much as requested, according to the latest Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes (SWAA). Resistance to a return to hybrid and in-person work has cropped up in finance (see Goldman Sachs), tech (Apple), and other sectors. 

Kick into high gear. Track & field saw far more runners finish races — from the 800 to 10,000 meters — in elite times in 2021. What gives? Shoe design, mainly. New spike shoes are incorporating elements, like super light foam and rigid plates, that appear to be putting more spring in runners’ steps. 

What happened to “other”? The swarm!
