Investors recently got some very welcome relief from the relentless stock market downturn. After a rough couple of months for stocks — with the S&P 500 officially falling into a bear market in June — last week was another good one for the major indexes. That may have you wondering: Is the bear market you’ve been hearing so much about finally ending?

Sorry to disappoint, but not necessarily. Last week, I wrote about how bear markets often include small rallies that get investors’ hopes up. Take the dot-com bust, for example. Between the S&P 500's peak in March 2000 to its low in October 2002, the index lost 49% of its value — but along the way it saw 11 different rallies of 5% or more, according to analysts at Bespoke Investment Group.
