Bruce Campbell is operating on a higher level than the rest of us. Case in point, you might think his cameo in Doctor Strange 2 was just a bit of fun, but Campbell knows better. “My character up-ended Doctor Strange by delaying him for about 45 seconds,” the Evil Dead star told Inverse at Comic-Con last week. In the process, he may have saved the Avenger’s life.

NASA greenlights two new Mars helicopters

NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have agreed to “significant and advantageous changes” to a major part of the conceptual design for its Perseverance mission.

Perseverance’s high-flying robotic companion, the Ingenuity helicopter, has inspired the design of two future rotorcraft that would swerve over the Martian terrain to pick up rock samples. This duo would be part of an existing concept, NASA’s Sample Retrieval Lander.

The retrieval is currently slated to begin sometime near the end of 2027.

A new robotic twist on the “Turing test” fools human subjects

If you ran into a robot in the street, there are a number of crucial giveaways that would help you pick it out from a human crowd — silicon skin or unblinking eyes, to name a few.

Yet, when people cannot see the robots they interact with, this distinction between what is and isn’t human becomes much hazier. That’s the premise of the Turing test, which helps determine whether or not a robot or A.I. can pass as human. In a new paper, a team of researchers report that their robot test subjects have passed this new, non-verbal Turing test.

A deadly, disease-causing bacteria was detected in US soil samples

The Centers for Disease Control has issued a health advisory about a potentially deadly bacteria found in the soil of the Gulf Coast region of Southern Mississippi.

The microbe, Burkholderia pseudomallei, isn’t novel. Its endemic in some tropical and subtropical climates like Southeast Asia and Northern Australia but its recent detection in the Gulf is the first time the bacteria has been detected in water and soil samples in the continental United States.
