Congo set to auction UNESCO World Heritage site to oil companies
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced that it will auction off vast quantities of critical tropical peatlands and rainforests for oil and gas drilling, just months after promising to preserve them at the COP26 climate conference. The site spreads across six countries and stores more than three years of global carbon emissions. Last week, the Congolese government said that the decision is key to raising funds to fight poverty and a rising cost of living crisis across the country.
Our take: This brings to the fore one of the more politically contentious sides to the climate debate. Rich nations have consistently refused to accept liability or calls for compensation due to historical responsibility for climate change. Without financial support for vulnerable nations - they are forced to make trade offs between economic development and sustainable growth.

UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) clamping down on greenwashing
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will be scrutinising eco-friendly and sustainability claims made by ASOS, Boohoo and George at Asda about their fashion products. The move comes as part of its ongoing investigation into potential greenwashing and follows concerns around the way the firmsā€™ products are being marketed to customers as eco-friendly and not aligning to its Green Claims Code .
Impact: It remains to be seen what will result from the CMAā€™s investigation but the UK Fashion Industry has been put on notice. This is sure to make marketing departments across the fashion industry think twice about their green claims.

Good news for sustainable farming policy in Ireland
Irelandā€™s government has reached a bitterly contested deal to slash emissions from the agricultural sector by 25% by 2030 - the first emissions target to be agreed for agriculture in the country.
In the balance: European nations are implementing policies that gradually reduce farming GHG emissions without jeopardising the food supply. Other countries, such as Sri Lanka, have been more aggressive by banning agrochemicals - which wrecked crop yields and contributed to the governmentā€™s collapse
Whyā€™s this important? Governments play a crucial role in food production - for years, policy supported intensive (and damaging) farming systems. Future policy must be innovative to ensure a transition to climate-friendly farming without risking food supply.

UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) to boost finance for small-scale clean energy in developing countries
The problem: Globally, 600mn people donā€™t have access to reliable electricity -  many in rural areas of developing countries
The solution: Providing these communities with small-scale, low-carbon energy solutions (i.e., off-grid solar) is key to sustainable development - think increased access to health, education, and productivity services (eg. electric-powered irrigation for farmers)
Nothing is simpleā€¦ a predicted $35bn of investment is needed to develop these small-scale, low-carbon energy projects. However, the perceived risk of these investments means investment is not forthcoming.
CAP Financial Innovation Challengeā€¦ is a competition looking for innovative uses of ā€˜financial aggregationā€™ (see below) to bundle projects together to mitigate investment risk AND increase availability + reduce the cost of financing for projects. The competition winner will receive a cool $40,000 award to scale their concept.

National Trust bets big on climate tech
The National Trust (Europeā€™s largest conservation charity, owning 1% of all UK land) has dedicated a chunk of its $1.8bn in assets under management to a testing ground on new ideas for tackling climate change. The charity has invested in startups focusing on nuclear fusion, decarbonising cement, and hydrogen fuel for aviation. Investment into these moonshots are important to support these potentially impactful innovations in scaling their impact. At the same time they will potentially assist The National Trust to eliminate emissions from its operations by 2030. However, these investments are unlikely to move the needle in the short term, so the organisation is combining this with divestment from fossil fuel companies and creating carbon offsets to hit 2030 targets.

Joe Manchin - U-turn a huge win for US Climate goals
What happened? We spoke last week about how Senator Joe Manchin told Democratic leaders he would not support new spending on climate measures delivering a blow to President Bidenā€™s ambitious agenda.
What now? In a sweeping U-Turn, Manchin has now signified his support for the 725-page ā€˜Inflation Reduction Actā€™  that tackles US debt. Here are our highlights and a couple of lowlightsā€¦

The key bits:

  • $60bn for environmental justice investments - incl. cleaning up ports, community grants and cleaning up dirty vehicles that hit disadvantage communities the hardest

  • $30bn in Tax credits for solar, wind, batteries and critical minerals

  • $20bn to support climate-smart agriculture practices and conversation

  • A methane fee: Methane leaking from oil and gas wells, pipelines and an array of other infrastructure would be charged at $1,500 a ton (a big deal as it has 84x more warming potential than carbon dioxide in the short term)

The cost of a compromise:

  • It mandates the federal government to offer up parts of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaskaā€™s Cook Inlet for oil and gas development. It also requires additional oil and gas leasing for new wind and solar projects to be approved.

  • There is a side deal to move a separate bill in September for so-called ā€œpermitting reformā€ that could weaken core protections under the National Environmental Policy Act, the federal law that gives communities a voice in what happens to the environment around them.

Potential Impact: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 symbolises the largest piece of climate legislation in the US. The authors of the bill predict it will cut US emissions by 40% by 2030, based on 2005 levels, a claim guardedly backed by independent experts.

What happens next:

  • The Senate is aiming to bring the bill to the Senate floor this week

  • The House would likely pass it soon after that.

A big week: In the same breath, the Senate also approved an innovation bill with tens of billions of dollars for the Department of Energy and National Science Foundation to boost semiconductor manufacturing (solve bottlenecks in electric vehicles and solar production.)

  • Reading Football Club release new strip featuring climate change design

  • A new global coalition has called on exploring hydrogen fuel produced from nuclear power, as it could provide a critical climate solution.

  • Scientists say that enriching European lakes with particular species of bacteria could be a natural way to remove plastic pollution from the environment.

  • Hemp could make a comeback as a sustainable construction material in the US as farmers are legally growing hemp on an industrial scale.
