🍿 'Prey' is the reboot we didn't know we needed

Inverse Daily

Hello there August 04 2022

Like a lot of people, I’d pretty much written off Predator. Sure, the original is a classic from a bygone era when throwing a bunch of muscular actors together onscreen was an innovative idea (and not just an Expendables sequel), but the franchise’s track record since is among Hollywood’s worst. So consider my surprise at Prey, which manages to take the original concept and spin into something that actually feels original by shifting the focus from 1980s Western machismo to pre-colonial American epic.

I won’t spoil a single detail here, but you can find our full review of Prey (streaming August 5 on Hulu for… reasons) in today’s edition of Inverse Daily, along with the latest in science, gaming, and entertainment.

Kevin Bacon on monsters, They/Them, and bringing his Mutant to the MCU

Kevin Bacon is no stranger to the summer camp slasher film. He famously got an arrow to the neck in Friday the 13th. Now, 42 years later he’s taking on a new and more challenging summer camp role as the villainous leader of a gay conversion camp in They/Them on Peacock.

Bacon plays Owen Whistler, the owner and leader of a camp where queer teens are sent to “become normal” again. But how do you play a character with so much hate inside in a way that still allows him to feel like a human being? It was a challenge for Bacon, as well as writer and director John Logan.

Prey is the reboot we didn't know we needed

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg from a script by Patrick Aison, Prey lives up to the glory expected of the Predator franchise while relishing in its novel 18th-century setting and Indigenous American ensemble cast.

On its own, Prey is a remarkable portrait of bravery in the face of survival, and at just 90 minutes, it’s a taut action-thriller that feels old school yet exciting for a new generation.

Ground-breaking tech restores dead organs back to a life-like state

In 2019, Nenad Sestan and a team of researchers at Yale University announced the seemingly impossible: They had revived a pig’s brain after death, restoring cellular functions that, according to the laws of nature, should have been entirely snuffed out.

Now, Sestan and his team are back, and this time, they reveal a way to partially revive all the organs in the pig’s body after death. This is the first time anyone has been able to restore organs in a body all at once.
