The clock is ticking. Facebook’s popularity among US teens has fallen fast over the last 8 years. Instagram usage is up, but TikTok — which was released after Pew’s first study — has jumped ahead of both Instagram and Snapchat. Meanwhile, a full 95% of teens say they use YouTube. 

Speaking of SaaS. Enterprise software companies are trading at lower multiples than the rest of the tech sector for the first time since at least 2019 (at the median). SaaS stocks — such as Salesforce and Workday — have dropped from pandemic highs due to concerns about inflation and a potential decline in enterprise software spending. Amid this volatility, investors have cut back hard on funding mega-rounds ($100M+ deals) to private companies.

Generation stations. Combined, wind and solar now generate more power than nuclear. While the exponential growth of wind + solar power generation is striking, nuclear generation did see a 4% boost in 2021 as China expanded its capacity. We look at the state of energy tech here. 

Bonjour blockchain. Europe saw record blockchain funding and deals in Q2’22, making it the only global region to see growth in the quarter. Six of the top 10 biggest deals went to Web3 cos and 3 went to institutional crypto & custody. Broadly, venture funding to the continent was more resilient than other major regions in Q2.

Rinse & repeat. Streaming services are finding it harder to hold onto subscribers. Nearly 20% of subscribers to services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max canceled 3 or more subscriptions over the past 2 years vs. 6% in the 2-year period that ended June 2020. Consumers are increasingly rotating through services to save money and watch the shows they want.
