🏀 WNBA playoffs: It all comes down to this
Supported ByThe GIST: Another ticket, punched. The No. 2 Chicago Sky are through to the semis after last night’s thrilling victory and will face the winner of tonight’s do-or-die matchup between the No. 3 Connecticut Sun and No. 6 Dallas Wings. Yeehaw!
Last night’s Game 3: Chicago’s quest for back-to-back titles is still alive thanks to last night’s 90–72 statement road win over the No. 7 NY Liberty. Two-time MVP Candace Parker led the way with her 25th playoff double-double while Courtney Vandersloot followed up with 14 points and 10 assists of her own. Just GOAT things.
- The Libs cut the lead to three early in the fourth quarter, but the sharp Sky shooting was just too much to handle with six players scoring in double figures.
Tonight’s Game 3: After splitting two lopsided games in Connecticut, the Wings host the Sun for tonight’s 9 p.m. ET win-or-go-home Game 3. And in addition to home court advantage, Dallas just gained another huge boost.
- Leading scorer Arike Ogunbowale (pronounced uh-REE-kay OH-goon-buh-WALL-ay), who missed the first two playoff games with an abdominal injury, is listed as probable to return tonight. A true game-changer.
- As for the Sun, they’ll need a big game from veteran DeWanna Bonner if they want to remain in the hunt for their first-ever W title. You don’t want to miss this.
🏀 NBA: No sleep till Brooklyn
The GIST: Just like your friend getting back together with their ex, the Brooklyn Nets announced yesterday that Kevin Durant (KD) will stay with the team, ending a summer of rumors sparked by the superstar’s request for a trade. Talk about a pump fake.
The timeline: At the end of June, just two months after the “super team” Nets were stunningly swept in the first round of the playoffs, KD requested to be traded from the team. Just about everyone was interested in the 12-time All-Star, but few could meet the lofty packages Brooklyn wanted in return.
- Amidst the stalled negotiations, Durant reportedly gave team ownership an ultimatum: trade him, or fire general manager Sean Marks and head coach Steve Nash. Aca-awkward.
- But the saga came to an end with yesterday’s announcement that KD and the Nets would in fact “move forward with [their] partnership,” keeping the embattled star in Brooklyn as his four-year contract extension kicks in this season.
What’s next: With many teams keeping their books open and waiting to make deals until Durant’s landing spot was finalized, there’ll likely be some major movement in the coming days.
- One squad to keep an eye on? The Utah Jazz. Their superstar, Donovan Mitchell, was already a top trade candidate, and his market will only heat up with KD off the block. Watch this space.

🏀 WNBA playoffs: Sky’s the limit
The GIST: Still on the edge of your seat after last night’s elimination battle between the Sky and Liberty? Same. But with the Sky through to the semis, let’s catch our breath and dole out our second Player of the Series honors.
The player: Who else but reigning Finals MVP Kahleah Copper? With the pressure on, she dropped 15 points last night to keep her squad’s championship dreams alive, but her most impressive performance came in Saturday’s Game 2, where she led all scorers with 20 points. Big time players making big time plays.
What’s next: As mentioned, Copper and the Sky await the winner of tonight’s win-or-go-home clash between the Sun and the Wings. While you count down the hours to tip-off, pass the time by browsing Under Armour’s women’s hoops gear. It’s the playoffs — what better time to treat yo’self?
