Hi friend,

It's the last week before Labor Day for our US family. Let those white linen pants roam free and untethered. Last week's post on envy got an overwhelming response - I guess we all get jealous of our friends' wins. This week I turned my sights on the meme-du-jour, quiet quitting.

Is quiet quitting a real thing?

Every decade has its memorable alliterations.

The 90s had Best Buy.

Jamba Juice came up in the 2000s.

Barry’s Bootcamp (and RadReads) were products of the 2010s.

And the 2020s gave us Quiet Quitting.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it was impossible to make it through this week without a mainstream publication offering a “Hot Take” on Quiet Quitting.

(Heck, my dad even forwarded me a CNN article about it.)

But alas. Not only were Boomers late to the discourse, Gen X and Millennials got caught flat-footed.

Quiet Quitting emerged as a viral trend on TikTok weeks ago.

With a head scratching proposal:

We’re just going to do the bare minimum of what our job requires.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Here are this week's top reads:

What comes after ambition?

9 minutes | Elle

Whether it’s quiet quitting, the WFH revolution, or professional maturity — I’m hearing a strong recalibration of ambition amongst my peers. Whether it’s chasing that VC money or becoming a law firm partner, a new question is being asked: At what cost? While this fantastic piece goes one layer further, exploring the question for women, it’s relevant for anyone inquiring about their own motivations. And it raises a perplexing $10K Question: if you do reduce your ambition, what replaces it?

Why the career of the future needs a portfolio approach

6 minutes | Charter Works

At RadReads, we’re big fans of a portfolio approach to work. The old career playbook of sinking 100% of your energy into one job just doesn’t work anymore (and it’s no secret, RadReads started as a side project). With growth in remote opportunities, existentialism, static wages, and corporate dissatisfaction, it’s safe to say we should not underestimate the power of a more diversified approach to work.

13 things to talk about in your 1-on-1s

4 minutes | Manager Tools

It’s that time of the week: 20 minutes of 1-on-1 time with your boss. Is this just another meeting to get through? Or are you using this opportunity to advance your career and make yourself indispensable? At RadReads, we take our 1:1s very seriously and we’ll be implementing many of these recommendations (”escalate blockers”) into our process.

Sacred hours

4 minutes | The Future Does Not Fit In Containers Of The Past

Do you know that once we adjust for sleep, we only have 68 hours to ourselves every week. (I know, choose wisely.) A simple anecdote to feeling like you don’t have enough time? One hour per day spent on yourself (no, not your boss, your family, your to-do list). Whether for learning, reading, exercising, thinking, meditating, or walking — it’s solitary, special, sacred, and non-negotiable. But where do we get those 7 hours from? Zero based calendaring, delegation, reducing other meetings and compressing time for other tasks.
