This Week's Recommendations

  • Two new books we're excited about:
Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid is about a 37-year-old tennis legend who is determined to defend her record, making the decision to come out of retirement. Ooooh.
The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell is a fictional portrait of the captivating young duchess Lucrezia de' Medici as she makes her way in a troubled court. Perfect for historical fiction fans.
(Check out our bookshop for more recs!)
  • Get hydrated: Monday after a wedding got you down? LMNT electrolyte drink mix might help you feel human again. The single-serve packs come in seven different inventive flavors—like citrus salt and mango chili—but don’t include sugar, dye, or artificial ingredients. Get a free sample pack with purchase.  Sponsor
  • A travel-friendly case: "I keep my daily supplements in this geniusly-designed pill case that snaps together magnetically. These also perform double duty: I'm planning to decant some face lotions, creams, etc. into them for an upcoming trip." -Alisha
  • A blast from the past: We're going deep into the YouTube beauty tutorials of this legendary makeup artist we had forgotten about but are delighted to rediscover. The verdict: she's still got it (of course).
  • Ok, hear us out: An elaborate board game...that has a Tuscany expansion pack? Where one grows grapes and makes wine? Sign us up!
  • Night cream dreams: Developed by industry experts for all ages and skin types, Onekind’s Dream Cream Nighttime Moisturizer locks hydration in with squalane, brightens skin with rosehip oil, and soothes you to sleep with chamomile, lavender, and rose. Try it FREE with code GNI, just pay S&H.  Sponsor
  • A late summer dish: This eggplant + tofu recipe looks delicious.
  • Things to watch: Partner Track (we're rooting for actress Arden Cho!), Selling the OC (for Selling Sunset fans), and Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist (how footballer Manti Te'o was catfished - a wild story!).
  • We're flattered: For me, I really like...

Support your hair wellness from within. (Bye, hair thinning!)

Needless to say, stress is…not fun. Particularly when it’s chronic and you just can’t seem to escape it, whether it comes from balancing your work life and kids, having a trying week at work, or losing sleep over a big, scary life change that’s upcoming.

This type of chronic stress can cause hair thinning and, well, for those of us who suffer from it, this can cause even more stress and embarrassment! The good news is that there are tools out there that can help you destress and target the root cause of hair thinning, like Nutrafol, the buzzy supplement brand everyone’s talking about.

Nutrafol is the #1 dermatologist-recommended hair growth supplement brand that aims to improve hair health by reducing stress and androgens in the body. It’s clinically proven, physician-formulated, and 100% drug-free.

Try adding the De-Stress Hair Growth Kit to your nightly self-care routine: it includes a one-month supply of Nutrafol’s hair growth supplement (4 capsules per day) and a targeted Stress Adaptogen booster (2 capsules per day) for extra support. Nutrafol’s got tons of other products we're excited about, like a hair serum and a collagen product, that can fit nicely into our existing wellness rituals. 🛀

3 Good Things with Food and Culture Writer Bettina Makalintal

A series where people we like recommend things they think are worth trying.

Bettina Makalintal is one of our favorite food writers (and really, just overall good person to follow online) right now. Born in the Philippines and raised in suburban Pennsylvania, she is particularly interested in food, culture, identity, and their intersections. Bettina writes curiosity-driven, reflective pieces at Eater that invites you to take a second look at the ordinary or widely accepted. Like this piece on what a better, more inclusive restaurant bathroom could look like or this piece on the “impossible dream of authenticity” in a popular Netflix documentary. Lighter fare that’s perfect for debating in your group chat also sits within her repertoire, like this recent piece on the “right” amount of garlic to put in a recipe. Outside of her professional work, Bettina shares excellent food grams from her home kitchen and on-point, often hilarious tweets

Enjoy Bettina’s recommendations, below!
  1. Tomato season. I spend all year looking forward to the tiny window of time when tomatoes are truly worth eating; luckily, we’re in it for a few more weeks. To me, there’s no greater joy than eating sungolds by the handful, still warm from the walk home, and making sounds of delight with each candylike orb. For a meal, I love small tomatoes in a quick gnocchi and mozzarella bake, or these easy cold noodles from Eric Kim. I like big tomatoes best in a messy tomato sandwich, but this salad from Hetty McKinnon is also a refreshing, summer-worthy mix of flavors and textures.
  2. Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. Black Cake is a novel about two estranged siblings who reunite after their mother passes away and leaves behind a mysterious recording and some of her black cake, that rummy dessert from the Caribbean. This story, which I found particularly well-suited for an audiobook, is ambling, unpredictable, and full of interesting characters. I loved getting to shut off my day by retreating into their worlds and minds as I cooked dinner and did chores, reflecting on all the stories food can tell.
  3. Internet boundaries. There are people who pop up on my feeds who, without fail, annoy me; this is a truth of the internet. But as fun as it can be to bond with others over shared dislikes, I feel worse in all ways when I let myself get sucked into too many outrage spirals. Especially as I enter a new decade, I’m trying not to let other people have as much control over my happiness, so I’m taking more care to mute, unfollow, and block — when needed — those people, accounts, and phrases that I know will get me riled up. Making the time I spend online more enjoyable is a good enough reason.
