Chief Justice John Roberts defends legitimacy of court.
Associated Press (Center) • Factual Grade 75% • 3 min read

Roberts said he was concerned that lately some critics of the court’s decisions have questioned the legitimacy of the court. “If the court doesn’t retain its function of interpreting the constitution, I’m not sure who would take up that mantle. You don’t want the political branches telling you what the law is, and you don’t want public opinion to be the guide,” Roberts said.
    ...
He also said it was “gut wrenching” to drive into the Supreme Court that was surrounded by barricades. The barriers were installed in May when protests erupted outside the court and homes of some justices after [the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade leaked].
    ...
The barriers are gone and the public will be allowed back inside when the court’s new session begins in October but an investigation ordered by Roberts into the leak continues. Speaking at the same conference, Justice Neil Gorsuch condemned the leak. “Improper efforts to influence judicial decision-making, from whatever side, from whomever, are a threat to the judicial decision-making process,” Gorsuch said.

Should credit card companies track gun purchases?

568 votes, 72 comments

Context: Credit card interest group and several large companies assign unique identifier to gun purchases.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Although it may not detract from the overall associations with gun violence, tracking from credit cards may impact the most horrible, anomalous incidents due to the individual, isolated large purchases. This type of thing seems to be an area in which the information can be most useful as long as the general information is not abused.

No - The amount of data tracking in the US is out of hand. We should not be track...

Unsure - I'm not necessarily opposed to gun control, but I am wary of surveillance, especially in the private sector. In the Western world surveillance is carried out by large private act...
