Poverty and uninsured rates drop, thanks to pandemic-era policies.
NPR (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 85% • 4 min read

Childhood poverty dropped substantially in 2021, falling from 9.7% in 2020 down to 5.2%, [according to the Census Bureau's report]. The overall poverty rate for all age groups was just under 8% — a decline from 9.2% in 2020.
    ...
These figures are based on the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which takes into account all kinds of expenses families have, as well as the range of pandemic aid many families received. Poverty experts attribute much of this improvement to the child tax credit which Congress boosted in 2021 in the American Rescue Plan. Congress also expanded it to include millions more low-income families.

8.3% of Americans [were uninsured] in 2021. That's an improvement from 2020, when [it was 8.6%]. The force behind this is Medicaid, according to census officials. [A Covid-19 bill passed in March 2020] mandated that state Medicaid programs not force enrollees to requalify for the program – so states could enroll new people but not kick anyone off. Another area of growth was Medicare, though that's due to more people becoming eligible.

Should those applying to colleges consider the mainstream rankings?

Context: Columbia University drops on US News & World Report college ranking, admits to submitting faulty data.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - This is exactly why 2 weeks ago there was so much discussion on student loans. No, where you go makes no difference and an arbitrary opinion list or ranking doesn't make it any more valuable. Go to a regular college or trade school and get a degree in a field that's actually marketable and not go based on a ranking that only inflates the cost.
