While Kaleigh McMordie was in grad school learning to become a dietitian, she found herself seeking a creative outlet.

She discovered a few registered dietitians who had successful blogs, and it seemed a perfect match: a blog would allow her to combine her love of cooking with her developing nutritional knowledge.

In 2015, McMordie started Lively Table, a recipe blog focused on simple, healthy recipes.

Three years later, she was making enough advertising revenue to leave her part-time dietitian job and focus on her content site full time.

Then, by expanding to other income sources like brand partnerships, she was able to boost her revenue as she worked from home with her newborn.

Smart approach to buying websites

While we typically talk about selling companies, this is so clever I wanted to pass it on.

It's a way to find websites with opportunity that aren't listed for sale on a marketplace.

The content operator who shared this tactic called it "finding the needle in a haystack."

"The best deals I’ve ever done," he wrote, "have come from manually searching for under-monetised or abandoned projects and cold emailing the webmasters."

Sites like this can be a great launching-off point for building a web property, or a way to layer on SEO value and audience reach for an existing company.
