The GIST - Orange you glad
From The Gist Team
Happy Monday!
Itâs definitely a happy one for the newly crowned 2022 WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces. More on them below (of course), but you can start your week on a winning note by checking your voter registration status ahead of National Voter Registration Day tomorrow.
- Rock the vote (just like the players of the W), then scroll on.

I saw excellence and I wanted to be a part of it.
â WNBA champion head coach Becky Hammon, on why she left the NBA after eight years as an assistant coach to bet on the Las Vegas Aces. Mission accomplished. |

đ WNBA Finals: Hitting the jackpot
together withThe GIST: So nice, we had to say it thrice: the Las Vegas Aces are your WNBA champions after grinding out a 78â71 victory in Game 4 against the Connecticut Sun yesterday. Cue that confetti.
Yesterdayâs Game 4: It took the entire star-studded Vegas lineup to get the job done. Finals MVP Chelsea Gray (20 points) continued her incredible postseason run, Riquna (rih-QWAHN-uh) Williams added 17 off the bench and league MVP Aâja Wilson posted a double-double, notably playing every minute of the title-clinching win. Heart of a champion.
- The Sun kept things interesting â specifically Alyssa Thomas, who netted her second straight (and just the second ever) Finals triple-double â but the Acesâ full house of talent would not be denied.
- Their fearless leader? Vegas head coach (HC) Becky Hammon, whoâs now the first HC to hoist the trophy in her inaugural season and the first W player to win the âship as a HC. You hear that, doubters?
Season in review: The Acesâ explosive win was the perfect exclamation point on an unforgettable WNBA season. Record-setting viewership, mind-blowing stat lines, a couple of GOATs making their final runs â the list goes on and on. This yearâs chapter might be closing, but itâs just the beginning for the continued growth of the league. Count (on) it.
đ NFL: Week 2 highlights
Flying high: The Arizona Cardinals overcame a 20-point deficit to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 29â23 yesterday. Cardinals quarterback (QB) Kyler Murray tied the game on a two-point conversion as the clock expired, sending the game to overtime, where cornerback Byron Murphy recovered a fumble for the win. We love cheap thrills.
Welcome to the show: The two highest-drafted 2022 wide receivers (WRs) both scored their first NFL touchdowns (TDs) yesterday. The NY Jetsâ No. 10 pick Garrett Wilson found the endzone twice, including a clutch game winner against the Cleveland Browns, while the Atlanta Falconsâ No. 8 pick Drake London snuck in from just over four yards out in his squadâs closer-than-expected 31â27 loss to the LA Rams.
Bet on it: Despite a solid effort from QB Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens fell prey to Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, who put together a stellar afternoon of his own, throwing a career-best six passing TDs in Miamiâs come-from-behind 42â38 win.
Wounded warriors: The Week 2 injury list is sadly quite extensive, and the biggest name on it is San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance, who was carted off the field after breaking his ankle yesterday, putting an end to his sophomore season. Brutal.
Looking ahead: Weâll be waiting all day for tonightâs Monday Night Football two-fer. First, QB Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills host running back Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans at 7:15 p.m. ET on ESPN in the U.S. and TSN1/4 in Canada. Hide your folding tables.
- Then, Week 1 breakout star WR Justin Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings head east to take on the Philadelphia Eagles at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC in the U.S. and TSN3 in Canada.
đ WNBA Finals: Thatâs all she wrote
The GIST: And just like that, the WNBA season has come to a close. By now you know that the Aces high-rolled their way to the âship yesterday, but thereâs still one more title to dish out: our final player of the series.
The player: No, youâre not experiencing deja vu â we have to go with Chelsea âPoint Gawdâ Gray once again. Gray was clutch personified throughout the postseason, dropping an average of 21.7 points per game and hitting plenty of jaw-dropping shots along the way. Unstoppable.
Looking ahead: With team and schedule expansion on the horizon, 2023âs already shaping up to be another milestone year for the W. And Under Armour (UA) is here to help the next generation of hoopers gear up for the future.
- Their newly released UA Flow Breakthru 2s were built for women, by women â music to our ears. Spend the W offseason dropping dimes by checking âem out today.

đâ˝ College soccer
This weekendâs action can be summed up in one word: historic. On the womenâs side, No. 7 Virginia defeated No. 2 UNC 3â2 on Saturday, becoming the first team to overcome a two-goal deficit in regulation against the powerhouse Tar Heels. Hoo said it couldnât be done?
- As for the men, No. 16 Syracuse proved theyâre the superior orange after upsetting the defending champs, No. 1 Clemson, 2â1 on Friday, and handing the Tigers their first regular season loss since October 2021. Dare to dream.
đđ College football
It was a relatively calm Week 3 for the Top 25 rankings, but there were still two significant upsets on Saturday. QB Bo Nix helped Oregon jump 10 spots to No. 15 with a massive 41â20 victory over thenâNo. 12 BYU. Texas A&M also pulled out an upset, topping thenâNo. 13 Miami 17â9. Expect the unexpected.
