They wrote me off, I ain’t write back though.
— Seattle Seahawks quarterback (QB) Geno Smith, after leading his squad to a 17–16 win over QB Russell Wilson (who Smith used to back up) and the Denver Broncos on Monday. Talk about mid-week motivation. |

🏀 WNBA Finals: Roll the dice
Together withThe GIST: The No. 1 Las Vegas Aces are one win away from the ’ship after last night’s thrilling 85–71 Game 2 dub over the No. 3 Connecticut Sun. The sun may set in the west, but this might end in the east as the series shifts to Connecticut for Game 3.
Last night’s Game 2: In not-so-shocking news, the unstoppable Aces dynamic duo of A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray scored 26 and 21 points, respectively, with Wilson recording her fifth consecutive double-double, not to mention a franchise record-tying point total. Sheesh.
- Add in a little Kelsey Plum magic (20 points) and you might have a recipe for a title.
- The Sun fought hard, but Las Vegas beat them at their own game, outscoring Connecticut 46-to-28 in the paint, with Sun star DeWanna Bonner held to just two points.
Tomorrow’s Game 3: Time to fly charter to the Nutmeg state, where Vegas could hoist their first franchise WNBA trophy. If their three-headed monster in Gray, Wilson and Plum can match yesterday’s showing, the Aces could be high-rolling away with the title.
- As for Connecticut, no squad has overcome an 0-2 deficit in a best-of-five series in W history, but this Sun team is resilient. If they can find some consistency on offense, they stand a chance of staying alive and fending off the Aces’ championship dreams.
- Tipoff is tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN — you don’t want to miss this.
😡 WTF round up: Blowing the whistle
The GIST: While the championship push continues in women’s hoops, men in the basketball world are fouling out, with a team owner suspended for workplace misconduct and a player facing potential discipline for homophobic comments. That’s right, it’s time for another WTF roundup.
Robert Sarver: The longtime Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner was suspended for one year and fined $10M (the maximum amount) yesterday, after the conclusion of a nearly year-long investigation into allegations of racism and misogyny within the Suns organization.
- That investigation found that Sarver used the N-word at least five times while recounting statements of others, engaged in inequitable conduct toward female employees and made many sex-related comments in the workplace, among other disturbing findings.
- The announcement offers a long-awaited conclusion to an investigation that included 320 current and former employees, but the discipline is a mere slap on the wrist, especially considering the league’s previous punishments for similar (mis)conduct. The math’s simply not mathing.
Anthony Edwards: The NBA is reviewing anti-gay comments the Minnesota Timberwolves guard made in an Instagram video posted over the weekend. Edwards has since apologized for the now-deleted video — in which he uses an anti-gay comment to describe a group of people standing on a sidewalk — but could still face a fine.
- In years past, the league has fined players anywhere from $25K to $100K for using anti-gay language. The ball’s in their court again.
🏀 WNBA: Banking buckets
The GIST: While the Aces and Sun are draining buckets in the Finals, the whole league is picking up financial pointers from U.S. Bank.
The context: Did you know only 56% of women feel comfortable managing their finances? Playing ball doesn’t mean you’re a baller, just like banking doesn’t make you a banker.
The game: Fortunately, as a WNBA Changemaker, U.S. Bank is supporting W athletes in their financial game by providing education and mentorship so that hoopers can feel confident about their money moves. Cardi B would be so proud.
The final whistle: It’s not just female athletes that need an assist. Everyday women do, too. Despite posting better investment returns than men, lower wages and a lack of confidence continue to hurt women’s financial health.
- While you’re learning about U.S. Bank’s partnership with the W, drive your own ball to the basket by seeing how U.S. Bank can support you.
