Tips to be More Effective As a Solo Marketer

First off... can we just take a minute and give a massive round of applause to all of the solo marketers out there who are grinding it out every day? You all are champions in my book. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Many of us got our start as solo marketers. It can be an exciting role to be in if you've got the freedom and support from your leadership.

Early in my marketing career I had the role of my dreams leading the marketing for a SaaS startup as a solo marketer. While it was fun, I wish I could go back and apply some tips from hard learned lessons to make my life (and results) a bit better.

✅ Tip 1 -- Take a Principled Approach

When I say "Principled" I mean actually writing down operating principles to guide our work.

Steal these examples:

- Always know the lead, lag, and success KPIs for any initiative I'm working on.

- Working on more than 2 initiatives at the same time is going to result in less effective execution.

- Prioritize initiatives based on velocity, efficiency, and scalability of results.

✅ Tip 2 -- Work in Sprints

One way to avoid the hamster wheel of work is setting clear quarterly sprints.

Pick 1-2 primary initiatives.

Document the objective and KPIs

Document the work you'll do to achieve the objective.

Document the timeline of this work.

Here's an example:

Objective: Grow brand awareness and increase social media engagement metrics by 200% in Q2.
Key Result 1: Post on X platform once per day and optimize for engagement.
Key Result 2: Comment and engage with key opinion leader profiles at least once per day.

✅ Tip 3 -- Know When to Outsource

This is one of the most important tips. Outsourcing too soon can be a waste of money. Outsourcing too late can be a waste of time.

The way I see it -- We should outsource work if the following are true:

We have budget
We have repeatable results
We've developed streamline processes

Working as a solo marketer is rewarding but it can be stressful. Deploy these tips and you'll be more effective (and probably impress your boss).
